ITE 2702 - CM Moratuwa University

This document is an examination for a Computational Mathematics course consisting of 4 questions worth a total of 100 marks. Question 1 involves errors in ratios, Gaussian elimination, and solving a system of linear equations. Question 2 derives the normal equation for a least squares polynomial of degree one and uses least squares to find parameters for a radioactive decay model. Question 3 involves row operations on determinants, solving a system of equations, and proving a property about intersecting circles. Question 4 analyzes a cubic function graph, uses bisection and Newton-Raphson methods to find roots, and determines the number of real roots based on the number of turning points.

A function/(x)

= 21x3

2X2 - 2x - 23 is shown over the range 0 <x< 2 in the graph above.

A student is attempting to find the root of the equation f(x) = 0 in the range 0 < x < 2 by the bisection method, and makes two initial guesses of XI = 0 and X2 = 2. She then evaluates the function at these two points, obtaining f(O) = -23,[(2) = 133.

(a) What would the next three guesses X3, X4 and Xs be when using the bisection method? [09 Marks]

(b) The student decides instead to use the Newton-Raphson method to make the third guess X3 , after the two initial guesses of XI = 0 and X2 = 2. Use a graphical

construction to make an estimate (to two significant figures only) of what her next guess would be in this case. [06 Marks}

(c) Calculate the exact gradient of the tangent at x = 2 and so calculate to three significant figures the next guess X3 using the Newton-Raphson method. Your answer may be left in an un-simplified form. [05 Marks}

(d) The above mentioned function is found to have two turning points, at x = -0.149 and at x = 0.213. The function evaluated at these points is f( -0.149) = -22.8,f(0.213) = -23.3.

How many real roots do you expect the cubic equation to have?
