The 856/956/X-series
The 856 was one of the best cross country bikes ever produced. It was designed back in 1994 by Girvin Pro~flex and originally launched as the 855. The 856 was simply an updated 'bug release' that had better frame welds and MCU shocks with oil damping. The 956 model had better components, the X-series bikes were a special UK based set of three models based on the 856 frame. When the 856 is mentioned in this document, it also applies to the 956 and the X-series bikes.
The document covers how to service the ODS shock. You may wish to replace the MCU's with the RDS COR spring, see http://www.rapiddescentscotland.co.uk for more details.

There was also a production problem at the factory. They were supposed to use shiny stainless steel as the spindle that holds the elastomers on the shock, but they didn't. So the oil that was used in the damping was 30wt, instead of a lighter weight of 10-15wt.

Put the shock into a vice. Using the green Park pin spanner, carefully remove the shock end cap from the shock. This is a a cylindrical cover that shields the inside from the elements
This is quite tricky and sometimes the pins will fly out of the holes. You will notice that the shock is vertical in the vice and the keyboard is pushed away from the vice... this is because the shock is full of black viscous oil and could easily ruin your day if it splashed everywhere. The top cap can be removed from the spindle keeping everything upright. The spindle will not be easy to remove. There are many ways of removing the spindle. RDS uses a small hydraulic ram to remove the spindle nice and cleanly, however, this is not in your average riders tool kit. Another idea is to put the hard elastomers back onto the shock and then simply tighten the preload adjuster until the spindle and the valves start to come out. Tip the old oil into a jar. Do not dispose of the oil down the plug in your house. This will lead to plumbing problems and lots of trouble from family. If the oil was frothy, then water has entered the shock. You may wish to contact your local bike shop to get new seals for the shock. For the time being, replace the oil. The K2 Bike (Proflex) documentation states that the following amounts should be used: ODS Unit Front Shock Oil Level 44mm Volum e 10.4cc
Rear 53mm 12.4cc The shock oil level is not the 'depth' of the oil but is the measurement from the rim of the shock to the top surface of the oil. The best way to measure this is to get a toothpick or a straw and measure the oil level and mark the toothpick. Hold this in the shock and then pour in the oil until it reaches the end of the measuring stick.
