Power Piping: ASME B31.1-2012

ASME B31.1 is a standard for the design, materials, fabrication, testing and maintenance of piping systems used in power plants, industrial facilities, and heating and cooling systems. It addresses piping for boilers that generate steam over 15 psig or hot water over 160 psig and 250 degrees F. The 2012 revision includes requirements for cold forming austenitic materials and assessing piping material degradation. ASME B31.1 is widely adopted worldwide and is referenced in ASME's Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. It works together with other ASME piping standards to provide guidance to manufacturers, designers and owners of piping systems.

Power Piping

Standards for Engineers Worldwide

ASME B31.1-2012
ASME has been defining piping safety since 1922. ASME B31.1 prescribes minimum requirements for the design, materials, fabrication, erection, test, inspection, operation, and maintenance of piping systems typically found in electric power generating stations, industrial and institutional plants, geothermal heating systems, and central and district heating and cooling systems. It also covers boiler-external piping for power boilers and hightemperature, high pressure water boilers in which steam or vapor is generated at a pressure of more than 15 psig; and high temperature water is generated at pressures exceeding 160 psig and/or temperatures exceeding 250 degrees F. Key changes to this revision include the incorporation of cold forming rules from ASME Section I, PG-19, for austenitic materials as well as the addition of requirements regarding walkdowns and material degradation for Covered Piping Systems. ASME B31.1 is one of ASMEs most popular codes, widely adopted by jurisdictions worldwide. It is prominently referenced in ASMEs Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section I. This Code serves as a companion to ASMEs B31.3 Code on Process Piping as well as to the other codes in ASMEs B31 series. Together, they remain essential references for anyone engaged with piping. Careful application of these ASME B31 codes will help users to comply with applicable regulations within their jurisdictions, while achieving the operational, cost and safety benefits to be gained from the many industry best-practices detailed within these volumes. Intended for manufacturers, designers, operators and owners of piping systems including, but not limited to, steam, water, oil, gas, and air services, plus all potential governing entities.
