IMPROVING DELIVERY PERFORMANCE OF GROUND OPERATION USING A TRIMBLE GPS TRACKING SOLUTION
Blue Dart DHL is South Asia's premier courier, and integrated express package Distribution Company. It has the most extensive domestic network covering over 27,578 locations, and services more than 220 countries and territories worldwide through its parent company DHL, the premier global brand name in express distribution services. Its vision is to establish continuing excellence in delivery capabilities focused on the individual customer. Blue Dart runs economical, doorto-door, ground distribution service to over 27,578 locations in India for shipments weighing 10 kgs and above. It offers a cost-effective logistics option for less time-sensitive shipments. For making time bound deliveries, it runs a fleet of vehicles on pre-determined routes (between hubs) and schedules to provide committed delivery. Maintaining the transit schedule is the key need of the operation. Blue Dart DHL management has always pioneered technological investment to improve efficiency and customer service delivery and continues to do so. In 2007, it partnered with their vehicle vendors to install a GPS - based vehicle tracking solution on its all ground operation vehicles runs between hubs. Blue Dart DHL entrusted Trimble to implement its GPS - based vehicle tracking and monitoring solution duly integrated with their dispatch management system. With GPS on our ground operation vehicles, it has become very simple to locate any vehicle of our fleet in real time. Trimbles system helped us to track the movement of vehicles on route and ensure transit adherence, which is the most critical factor for our operations. This has also helped us to identify en route stoppage, delays, and other unforeseen situations and take corrective action says R Venket, Astt.Manager, Ground Network Operations of Blue Dart DHL.We have specially designed large monitoring screens in our Network Control Center (NCC) to track all India operations and manage ground operations, which is first of a kind in the industry, added Venket.

BLUE DART DHL

Blue Dart DHL tracks movement of all dispatched trucks on big screen NCC installed at their control center on Visual Cargo application offered over internet by Trimble. This application integrates GPS location data and Blue Dart DHL dispatch system (ERP) to provide trip based tracking. We liked the new operational dashboard of visual cargo applications which have been designed specifically for logistics operations by Trimble. With the all vehicles on trips dashboard, we are able to see the progress of each run with respect to origin, destination, current location and expected time of arrival at en route nodes and end destination. With the vehicle stationary on trips dashboard, we are able to quickly find out the stationary vehicles and take action to ensure time bound operations. Unlike others our vehicles need to run maximum in the night, hence the exception dashboard helps us to identify vehicles which have not run in the night says Venket. Considering our all India operation it was necessary for us to have service support in line with ground network, the Trimble service presence across India was a big reason for us choose them as our GPS partner added Venket.

The solution provides us an effective tool to analyze both drivers and transport vendors performance in terms of transit adherence turn around and safety. It helps us to evaluate KPIs and motivate/counsel them accordingly

Now we are able to know the availability of vehicles (Loaded or empty) and ETA (expected Time of Arrival) at any Blue Dart DHL hub, which makes our job easy to plan next run and assign trips accordingly. With visual cargo our ground operation team is able to forecast the delays and take alternate action to ensure our time bound dispatches, says Sonam Paliwal, Sr. Manager, Ground Operation, Blue Dart DHL. As we partner with multiple transport vendors, analyzing the performance of transport vendor and their drivers was a challenge, with visual cargos innovative performance rating system, we are able to get the rating for each trip based on our defined KPIs, and use them as effective tool to incentivize vendors/ drivers and counsel with non-performers.
