1 Aeronautical Engineering (Eng.) (Delft fulltime) Study variant

Fulltime

An aeronautical engineer designs and constructs aircrafts and aircraft components.

These design activities are at the heart of the programme. Centring on these
activities, you will learn about engineering in general and you will also acquire
practical experience during your work placements. You will graduate from the
Aeronautical Engineering programme as a Bachelor of Engineering in the broad field
of the aircraft and space industry. Outside this industry, you will be able to
work as an engineer in research and development departments, construction
companies and, for example, the automotive industry.

Other locations

This English bachelor programme is, besides Delft, also offered at these
locations:
INHolland Delft

2 Introduction
Study specifics

During your studies, you will develop engineering knowledge and you will also
learn how to work with the various computer, drawing and test programs used in the
aircraft and manufacturing industry. You will also greatly expand your basic
knowledge of mathematics and mechanics which you will have acquired at secondary
school. You will learn to apply this knowledge to practical assignments, such as
designing, developing, researching and testing systems.

The Aeronautical Engineering department of INHolland University of Applied

Sciences Delft works closely with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). You
will be able to make full use of the facilities available at TU Delft. For
example, in the first few years, you will get to use the mechanical workshop and
the wind tunnels. You will also have access to the university library. TU Delft
also possesses a whole range of aircraft components, even extending to complete
aircrafts. These too will come in very handy in your study programme.
Will this programme suit me?

Have you always wanted to know how aircrafts fly? Do you want to know what the
best materials are for the wing and what the best shape is? Are you curious about
how to calculate all this? Do you feel challenged when asked to come up with
creative technical solutions for contradictory requirements? Then there is
probably an aeronautical engineer inside you waiting to come out. The higher
vocational education programme in Aeronautical Engineering will get you off to a
flying start!
What field could I work in?

Work in the aircraft and space industry is challenging. Aircraft design is very
complex and offers plenty of scope for an engineer to use his creativity. For
engineers in the Netherlands, work in the aeronautical field is concentrated in
the maintenance and manufacturing industry. Examples include:

* Stork Aerospace (Fokker)

* Military aviation
* Schiphol
* Suppliers to Airbus and Boeing

Engineering firms, research agencies and institutes concerned with innovation also
welcome graduates of the Aeronautical Engineering programme with open arms. At
research institutes you can:

* design structures and systems, such as landing gear

* perform aerodynamic research in wind tunnels, for example to analyse the
flight behaviour of aircrafts with winglets
* conduct research into materials
* develop manufacturing methods
* control logistical processes

Just think of the success of Glare, a material that was developed in the
Netherlands. On modern aircrafts, it is used to construct wing and tailplane
sections.

You can also apply the knowledge you will acquire during the Aeronautical
Engineering programme to projects for generating clean, sustainable energy. Just
think of the aerodynamic and structural design of wind turbine blades. After
spending a number of years working in engineering to build up experience, you can
move on to positions such as:

* project manager
* quality engineer
* head of production or operations manager

You can work in, for example, the engine industry or in aircraft maintenance.
What job opportunities will I have?

Examples of jobs that will be within your reach as an Aeronautical Engineering

graduate are:

* design engineer
* structural engineer
* materials and composites engineer
* modification and repair engineer
* systems engineer
* flight test engineer
* detail design engineer
* stress engineer
* weight engineer
* test engineer
* manufacturing engineer

What are my career prospects?

You will graduate from the Aeronautical Engineering programme as a Bachelor of

Engineering. You will then be able to work anywhere in engineering. The career
prospects are excellent. For example, students are often offered a job before they
even conclude their work placement.

3 Degree programme
How is the programme structured?

In the first year of study (propaedeutic phase), you will take a number of basic
technical subjects. You will also be introduced to the field of aeronautical
engineering through:

* special projects
* classes
* practical assignments
* excursions

Later in the programme, the emphasis will be placed more on gaining an in-depth
knowledge of specialist aeronautical engineering subjects through lessons and
projects.

You will also learn to use various computer, drawing and test programs. Moreover,
you will learn to work in a team. You will attend training sessions and write
reports and dissertations. Finally, you will go on excursions and work field
trips. And, of course, you will do work placements. This broad programme will turn
you into a true professional.
What subjects are covered in the programme?

In the first year, you will be introduced to the following subjects:

* aircraft systems
* mechanics
* mathematics
* measurement and control engineering

Where can I go for help or advice?

Every student is assigned a student career advisor from the first year onwards. In
the first year, you will meet with your student career advisor every semester to
discuss how you can study more effectively and how you are getting on in the
programme. The assignments you will work on will also give you more insight into
the professions that will be available to you later. In subsequent years, your
student career advisor will help you decide on the further choices you must make
within the programme, such as differentiation minors and work placements.
Major/minor

There are three components to the bachelor's degree programme in Aeronautical

Engineering at INHolland University of Applied Sciences Delft: a major, a
specialisation minor and a differentiation minor.

The major is the core of the programme. It will account for half of your studies.
This is where you will acquire your general professional knowledge and skills. You
can choose a specialisation minor and differentiation minor according to your
personal interests and ambitions. These will each form one quarter of the
programme.

4 Study programme
What will I learn on the programme?

The Aeronautical Engineering programme will enable you to acquire the following
competencies and skills:

* drafting of a bill of requirements

* execution of a feasibility study
* formulation of technical specifications
* preparation of a conceptual design
* creation of a detailed design
* realisation of a product
* optimisation of a product
* management and maintenance of a product
* formulation of a project plan
* commercial thinking/behaviour and contact management

First year

In your first year, you will work on the basic skills needed for Technical
Engineering. This means that, in addition to a variety of projects, you will spend
much of your time on mathematics and mechanics. You will also develop practical
skills in various practical assignments.
Second year

The second year will start with a 10-week practical work placement. This is also
called the key work placement. You will then return to your studies to focus on
technical and aeronautical engineering subjects.
Third year

The third year of study will begin with a work placement during which you will
perform activities at graduate level. This work placement lasts one hundred
working days and presents the first opportunity for a stay abroad. The work
placement is completed with a report and presentation. You will then enter the
specialisation phase of your studies. You will enhance your theoretical knowledge,
focusing primarily on aeronautical topics, such as:

* flight mechanics and propulsion

* maintenance and aircraft systems

Final year

This is the year in which you will complete the programme. In addition to the
final theoretical component, you will dedicate a period of approximately five
months to your graduation project. You will work on this project independently.
The project tends to be an assignment by a company that culminates in a report
which will serve as your thesis. You will prepare and execute a plan of action.
You will present your results to the Aeronautical Engineering department and to
the company of your work placement. Once you have successfully defended your
thesis, you will be awarded the title of Bachelor of Engineering.
Work placement

A very important component of the Aeronautical Engineering programme is the work

placement. You will do a total of three work placements. You will embark on your
first placement, the shop-floor work placement, in the second year. You will spend
ten weeks gaining practical experience at a company. This might involve welding,
turning and assembly work, for example. All this will give you an insight into the
world outside your own programme, which will benefit you in your future career,
when you collaborate with colleagues from different backgrounds.

In the third year, you will do the vocational preparatory work placement. This
period usually runs from the beginning of September until the end of January. You
will spend at least twenty weeks at a company in the Netherlands or abroad. You
will acquire new experiences and will perform one or more assignments. You can do
the work placement at an engineering or testing department, for example at:

* Stork Fokker
* TNO

Engineering can also cover technical support for aircraft maintenance, for example
at:

* Nayak
* KLM
* Martinair
* Transavia

Specialisations and differentiation minors

Within the Aeronautical Engineering programme, you can fill one quarter of your
study time according to your own wishes by choosing your study components
yourself. With a differentiation minor (from the third year of study), you can set
yourself apart from other students and work on your own profile. This will make
you a specialist within your own field and will later add a very personal touch
when you have to present yourself in the labour market.

You will by supported and counselled in your choice by your personal student
career advisor. The differentiation minor comprises units of study of at least
fifteen European Credits. This gives you the opportunity to put together a package
that matches your interests and contains subjects in which you wish to develop
further. You yourself will be in charge of this part of your programme. One option
available to you is to pursue certain study components abroad.

In addition to the differentiation minors provided at the campus in Delft, you

will also be able to opt for differentiation minors from other locations of
INHolland University of Applied Sciences. This will give you a wide range to
choose from. A few examples of differentiation minors open to students enrolled on
the Aeronautical Engineering programme are:

* Lightweight structures design

* University of Technology transfer
* Aerospace Technology
* Airline transport pilot (in collaboration with the Dutch National Aviation
School - NLS)

Minors

In your future field of work, you may be confronted with a wide range of
activities. So it is only logical that your programme is tailored to this
diversity. During your studies, you will carry out a variety of projects. Examples
include:

* the aircraft selection project

* the elevator design project
* the landing gear project

Graduation

Finally, in the fourth year, you will do the graduation work placement. During
this fourth year, you will work on a graduation project for the Aeronautical
Engineering department. You will report on your progress and results. This
graduation project will be your thesis, and you will defend it in a final
presentation. You will have to prove that you are ready for the job!

Examples of companies and research institutes where you can do your graduation
work placement are:

* Dutch Space
* Atkins Nedtech
* NLR
* Senior Aerospace Bosman

5 Study information
What is the study load?

The programme has a study load of approximately forty hours a week. Some
components take more time than others and this will vary individually. Your
schedule will comprise:

* classes
* training lessons
* practical assignments
* projects
* homework
* preparation and write-up of class work

In the first year, approximately twenty hours will be scheduled for classes, which
means you will be expected to do a lot of independent study as well.
Binding Study Recommendation

During the first year of the programme (propaedeutic phase), INHolland University
of Applied Sciences will assess whether you have done well enough to continue with
your studies. Of course, you too will consider whether you believe you can
complete the programme and whether it is in line with your expectations. To
prevent the possibility of disappointment later, and to give you time to choose a
different programme if necessary, you will receive a study recommendation at the
end of the first year.

An important criterion for the assessment of your results will be the number of
European Credits you have accumulated. You can earn a total of sixty European
Credits a year. If you receive a positive recommendation, you can go on with your
studies. A negative recommendation is binding and means that you cannot continue
with the same programme at INHolland University of Applied Sciences. Of course,
that being the case, your student career advisor and student counsellor will help
you look for alternative (study) options.
Exceptions can be made if personal circumstances have caused a delay to your
studies. You must have sought to discuss any such situation with your student
counsellor in good time.
What exemptions apply?

Depending on your prior education and the results you have achieved, you may be
entitled to exemptions for certain components of the propaedeutic phase. Incoming
students educated to intermediate vocational level who have completed a programme
related to Aeronautical Engineering do not generally have to do a shop-floor work
placement and also have a shorter third-year work placement.
Will I be able to transfer to another programme?

Is the programme not exactly what you expected it to be? If so, you can transfer
to another programme within INHolland University of Applied Sciences at any point
during the first year. Of course, transferring to some programmes is easier than
others. Your student counsellor, is one of the persons who will be able to offer
you help and advice here.

You can take an assessment to gain an insight into your strengths and the areas in
which you could improve. The assessment focuses on how your knowledge and
(communication) skills have developed. It is development-oriented and will show
you which qualities you need to develop further for the purpose of your chosen
programme and profession. There are also other tests that may help you make the
right choices with regard to your studies and your career.
Studying abroad

Would you like to complete some of your programme abroad? You can! The
Aeronautical Engineering department has ties with universities of applied sciences
in Austria (Graz), for example. There are also relations with foreign companies
and organisations. A few examples are:

* Airbus
* ASCO (Belgium)
* EADS (Germany)
* FACC (Austria)
* Wits University (Johannesburg, South Africa)

Aeronautical Engineering is seen as a broad-based field, certainly

internationally. This is to your advantage, for example, if you decide to seek
international employment after your studies. The department will encourage you to
secure a work placement abroad. You will be introduced to a different culture,
gain work experience and improve your language skills. What is more, experience
abroad will give your diploma added value that is also recognised by the business
community.
Related higher vocational education programmes

Would you like to become an airline transport pilot, but you do not want to run
the risk of overly limiting your options? Then come take a look at the
Aeronautical Engineering department at INHolland University of Applied Sciences
Delft. Here you can combine aeronautical engineering with airline transport pilot
training. You will graduate with the title of engineer (ing.) while also becoming
a qualified airline transport pilot!
The programme

The first two years of your studies will be dominated by the Aeronautical
Engineering programme, which falls within the major Technical Engineering. In the
first year, you will learn to work on projects, developing your technical skills
in various areas within the aeronautical field, such as:
* design
* measurement engineering

In the second year, you will undertake the tests and selection processes for your
pilot training. It is not until after the tests at the end of the second year,
that you will decide whether or not you want to become an airline transport pilot
and to take the relevant training. You will also spend the second year developing
all the skills that make an aeronautical engineer so special. Moreover, you will
study subjects such as aerodynamics, aircraft structures and aircraft systems
maintenance.

In the third year, you will begin pilot training after a third-year work placement
lasting three months. You will be taught theory at the Dutch National Aviation
School (NLS) in Hoofddorp. You will also take the corresponding examinations. The
final year of your studies will be dedicated to the practical component of pilot
training and the conclusion of your programme. You will be given flying lessons at
the NLS location in Portugal. You will also complete the Aeronautical Engineering
programme. At the end of the programme, you will therefore be able to call
yourself both an airline transport pilot and an aeronautical engineer!
The licences

Your training will be geared towards obtaining the airline transport pilot's
licence in accordance with European regulations. This licence will enable you to
be employed by large airlines as a captain on passenger flights. You will be able
to use this to practise your profession in any European country.

At the end of the programme, you will possess the following licences:

* Frozen JAR-FCL ATPL(A)

* CPL(A)/IR/ME
* IR rating (Instrument Rating)

6 Further study
After graduation?

If you successfully complete the Aeronautical Engineering programme, you will

receive the title Bachelor of Engineering. You will then be able to put the
letters BEng after your name. This title indicates both nationally and
internationally at what level you have studied. In addition to the title of
bachelor in the Netherlands, you may also carry the title of engineer (ing.). This
diploma will give you access to various (master's) programmes both domestically
and abroad. There are also often exemptions to be gained on the basis of the
diploma, enabling you to complete a continuation course more quickly.
What continuation courses will be available to me?

If you wish to continue your studies, you can enrol on a variety of master's
programmes, both in the Netherlands and abroad. INHolland University of Applied
Sciences has concluded an agreement with Delft University of Technology for the
