Sig Tools - Semc

The document summarizes some observations about Symbian Foundation tools: - There are very few support channels and people answering questions about the tools. - Many tools have dependencies on other poorly documented systems. - The website is difficult to navigate and search returns thousands of hits. - Nokia provides many needed assets but some package owners are reluctant to provide information. - The support methodology needs to evolve to provide guaranteed correct answers instead of workarounds. The document also notes that SEMC is seeking ways to contribute to improving Symbian development tools, such as by developing Eclipse plugins.

SIG TOOLS - SEMC

CONFIDENTIAL 1
What we see today SF tools

• One thing on support would be that there are very few support channels
(one? –the forum?!) and very few people that answers…
• Another thing would be that there are quite a lot of dependencies to
other systems that are not in the foundation. –and hence lacking
documentation. (blacktusk, symsee, grace, diamonds, hti?)
• Web site is a bit noisy. Hard to find what you’re looking for. If using the
“search” function you can get thousands of hits…
• Its positive that Nokia provides the foundation with plenty of needed
assets.
• Some of the package owners are very reluctant to reply back. (CBR
roadmap for instance…)
• The support methodology still needs to evolve as there is no
guaranteed and correct answer for the question, sometimes you just get
a workaround which will lead to new problems.

CONFIDENTIAL 2
Going forward

• We are seeking the way of how and what could we contribute from
SEMC to make better SW tools for Symbian platform development

• Some areas could be…
• Eclipse plug-in (reltools, etc)
• Etc….
