Regulations relating to Ph.D. Degree Programme
I. Administration
By the Post Graduate Council constituted by the Vice Chancellor.
II. ELIGIBILITY
Ph.D. Degree (Law)
The Candidate shall have an LL.M. Degree from recognized University securing B+ grade or
an aggregate of 55% marks or its equivalent.
Ph.D. Degree (Inter-disciplinary)
1. The candidate having a Masters Degree in any discipline through regular stream with a
minimum of 55% or equivalent grade and a Bachelors Degree in Law from a recognized
University through regular stream shall be eligible for admission;
2. The candidate having passed the Company Secretaryship examination conducted by the
ICS in India and been awarded Associate Membership of the Institute (ACS) and having
a Bachelors Degree in Law from a recognized University through regular stream shall be
eligible for admission;
3. The candidate having passed the Chartered Accountants examination conducted by the
Institute of Chartered Accountants and been awarded Membership of the Institute of
Chartered Accountants and having a Bachelors Degree in Law from a recognized
University through regular stream shall be eligible for admission.

III. DURATION
1. The candidates are required to carry out research for a minimum period of three years
from the date of registration, which includes residential requirement as detailed in Rule
VIII and submit thesis within a maximum period of five years.
2. Failure to complete within the stipulated time (maximum period of five years) will lead
to cancellation of registration.

IV. ADMISSION PROCEDURE
1) Application
1. Application along with the research proposal of about 10 to 12 pages to be submitted
within the stipulated time.
2. The research proposal should contain
i) Title
ii) Statement of the problem and the background information on the subject
iii) A set of research questions along with Hypothesis & Methodology
iv) A Research Design containing chapters
c) The research proposal for inter-disciplinary research shall have components which have a
bearing on legal aspects, review and reform.

2) Admission Test
a) There shall be a written test which will consist of two papers
i) Paper I Research Methodology
ii) Paper II Research Proposal specific paper
b) Each paper shall carry maximum of 100 marks and the candidate securing not less than
50% marks in each paper will qualify for making an oral presentation before the expert panel.
c) The candidates who have qualified for UGC NET / J RF, SLET and M.PHI L.,Ph.D
and the FOREI GN NATI ONALS are exempted from taking the Admission Test.

3) Presentation
The candidates successful in written test and the candidates exempted from taking the admission
test shall be required to make an oral presentation before a panel of expert on the dates specified
for the University.

V SELECTION PROCESS
The candidates will be selected by the P.G. Council upon consideration of the research proposal
and the report submitted by the expert panel on the presentation.
VI ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SUPERVISORS
1. The Professors, including the Chair Professors and the Retired Professors of NLSIU will
be recognized as `Supervisors.
2. Associate Professors and Assistant Professors with Ph.D. and five years of teaching
including three years teaching after Ph.D. will be recognized as `Supervisor.
VII ALLOCATION OF SUPERVISORS
1. The allocation of the Supervisor for a selected candidate shall be decided by the P.G.
Council in a formal manner depending on the number of candidates per faculty member,
the available specialization among the faculty supervisor.
2. A supervisor ordinarily cannot have more than Eight Ph.D. Scholars at any given point
of time.

VIII COURSE WORK & RESIDENTIAL REQUIREMENT
a) The first three months after the commencement of the programme, the candidates
are required to fulfil the following by obtaining atleast 50% of marks in each paper:
i) To attend the Research Methodology course in a Trimester;
ii) To attend computer application classes conducted by the University in a Trimester; and
iii) Course work with the Supervisor (fine tuning of the research proposal and submitting a
refined version to the Supervisor) in a Trimester.
b) Scholars failing to secure 50% of marks in the courses mentioned above, may be provided
an opportunity to re-appear one or more time(s) within three months of the publication of results;
c) The scholar shall be allowed to continue further research work only after completing the
course work as mentioned above;
d) Residential requirement for at least 6 months including `course work as specified in (a)
above is compulsory.

In addition to course work, residential requirement is satisfied by offering a seminar course or
assisting the Supervisor / Faculty in teaching work or research assistance assigned by the
University for three months anytime during the course of 3 years duration.

IX REPORT SUBMISSION & PRESENTATION
1. There shall be three presentations during the programme.
2. On completion of three months from the date of completion of the `course work, the
candidate is required to send / submit the first report of progress to the Examination
Department which will be sent to the respective Supervisors for their evaluation and
suggestions. Thereafter the candidate will be furnished with the suggestions on the report
made by the supervisors.
3. The first presentation should be made within one month of the receipt of the suggestions
on the first report. It would require the candidate to detail out the identified problem,
research outline, a set of research questions, proposed methodological approach, besides
survey of literature.
4. On completion of six months after the first presentation, the candidate is required to
submit a report of the research work which would explain and analyse the
progress made by the researcher to the Examination Department which will be sent to the
respective Supervisors for their evaluation and suggestions. The candidate will be
furnished with the suggestions on the report made by the supervisors.
5. The second presentation should be made within one month of the receipt of the
suggestions on the second report. The second presentation will be evaluated by at least
two experts specialized in the area. The suggestions / comments made by the experts will
be furnished to the candidate by the respective Supervisors along with their suggestions.
6. The final presentation should be made at any time after completion of three years from
the date of registration, once the final draft thesis is approved by the Supervisor. The
candidates are required to submit 4 (four) copies of the draft thesis to the Examination
Department with an endorsement by the Supervisor. The final presentation will be
scheduled approximately one month after the submission of the draft thesis. .
7. There shall be at least three external experts on the panel to evaluate the final
presentation. The comments and suggestions of the experts shall be consolidated and
made available to the supervisor for suitably advising the candidate. After incorporating
the suggestions of the experts as certified by the Supervisor, the candidate is permitted to
submit his final thesis.

XI EVALUATION
1. The candidates are required to submit the thesis both in soft copy and hard copies in
quadruplicate (4 copies) after paying the requisite fee.
2. The thesis shall be in English and it shall be the result of candidates own work keeping
in mind the standard of literary presentation.
3. The thesis should not include any other work done by the candidate for any other degree
successfully completed at the present University or elsewhere.
4. The candidate should obtain a certificate from the Supervisor and the thesis should
contain the same.
5. The thesis submitted by the candidate will be sent to three external examiners (two
examiners from India and one examiner from foreign countries) selected by the Vice-
Chancellor, from out of a panel of ten external examiners submitted by the P.G. Council.
6. The examiners shall send detailed evaluation reports which shall include:
i) A detailed report in the proforma sent by the University;
ii) Questions to be asked or points to be clarified at the Viva-voce examination;
iii) A definite recommendation as to whether the thesis be accepted in the present form or
with minor revision or major revision or to be rejected.

7. If the three examiners recommend unanimously the award of the Degree, an `Open Viva-
voce examination shall be conducted by a panel consisting of three examiners, out of which at
least one examiner shall be among the three examiners who evaluated the thesis, constituted by
the Vice-Chancellor. After successful conduct of viva-voce examination, the award of the
Degree is recommended to the Academic council.

8. In case of two of external examiners not recommending the award of the Degree, the
candidate shall be provided through the Supervisor copy of the suggestions / comments made by
the examiners. The candidate is required to resubmit the thesis after incorporating the
suggestions / comments and submit the modified thesis within three months along with the
prescribed fee. Only one such resubmission shall be permitted.

XII AWARD OF DEGREE
The Degree shall be awarded after completion of all the above process at the time of Annual
Convocation. However, the candidate is entitled to take a Provisional Certificate as and when
the results are declared.

XIII GENERAL
1. Cases of Malpractice/Plagiarism All Ph.D. thesis submitted will be subjected to
plagiarism scrutiny / software. Anyone found guilty of committing plagiarism or any
kind of malpractice in the research work shall be subjected to punishment and penalty
imposed by the University in addition to cancellation of registration / withdrawal of the
Degree as the case may be. In such cases, the Supervisorship of the Research Supervisor
shall also be withdrawn.
2. Following the successful completion of the evaluation process and announcements of the
award of Ph.D. Degree, the University shall submit a soft copy of the thesis to the UGC
within a period of thirty days, for hosting the same in INFLIBNET, accessible to all
Institutions / Universities under intimation to the University and at least one copy of the
published work must be submitted to the University Library for the purpose of record.
XIV GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF THESIS
a) The length of the thesis should be preferably restricted to 300 printed pages;
b) Total number of references preferably to be restricted to 200;
c) The thesis to be printed on single side;
d) The thesis should be written in English;
e) The font shall be `Arial (12 font size to the body of the text and 10 font to be used for
tables, figure, appendices, etc.;)
f) To begin each chapter on a new page;
g) A margin of at least 4 cm to the left, top, bottom and right side may be stick to 2.5 cm;
h) The thesis should be free from grammatical and punctuation errors.
i) For Certificate, Declaration, etc.,- reference may be made to the thesis which have been
awarded the Degree and kept in the NLSIU library.

Rs.25,000/- : Registration Fee
Rs.15,000/- : Examination Fee (at the time of submission of thesis)
Rs.10,000/- : Continuation fee for 2 years after completion of three years

Ph.D. in Law

Eligibility: LL.M. with 50% marks.
Duration of the Course : Minimum two years (Four semesters)
Admission:
By Entrance Test held in July and January every year. The candidates who have qualified
UGC/CSIR (JRF) Examination/ SLET/Teacher fellowship holders or have passed M.Phil.
examination are exempt from entrance test.
It shall be followed by an interview organized by the Department, where the candidate is to
discuss their research interest/area.

First Semester:
Course Work (As Pre-Ph.D. preparation)
Course on Research Methodology, Computer applications, Review of published research in the
relevant field followed by written examination. The Course work may be carried out by the
doctoral candidates in sister departments/Institutes either within or outside the University.
Minimum qualifying marks to proceed further:
60% of total marks in the examination conducted after the Course work would qualify a
candidate to proceed further with the writing of the dissertation.
Submission of Synopsis:
The candidate with the approval of the Supervisor shall submit three copies of the Synopsis of
the topic on which he intends to undertake research to the Research Committee or Head of the
Department. The Research Committee of the Department or the Head, as the case may be, shall
approve the Synopsis and send it to the Registrar (Research). The candidate shall proceed to
undertake the research work and produce a draft thesis within a reasonable time.
Pre-Ph.D. presentation:
Prior to submission of thesis, the candidate shall make a presentation in the Department that shall
be open to all faculty members and research students, for getting feedback and comments, which
may be suitably incorporated into the draft thesis under the advice of the supervisor.
Publication of an article: The candidate shall publish one research paper in a referred Journal
before the submission of the thesis.
Submission of thesis: It shall be allowed only after two years of admission in the course and
undergoing the above procedure.

The Common Law Admission Test, popularly known as the CLAT is a national test for
admission to the B.A., LL.B (Honors) program at the university. The admission is purely based
on merit. Reservation of seats for backward classes is in accordance the applicable law in India.
Admission to the masters program is similar to the bachelor degree admission. A Common Law
Admission Test particularly for the masters program determines the merit of the student.
The eligibility for admission is the student having passed the bachelor law degree from a
recognized university with not less than 55% aggregate marks of the maximum marks.
Extra-curricular Activities
The National Law School of India has been a socially responsible and ethically aware institution

The National School of India believes in research and enquiry. There are numerous ongoing
