Offshore Floating Foundation - Tension Leg Platform

The document proposes using a tension leg platform (TLP) as a floating foundation to support offshore wind turbines in deep water. A TLP is a symmetrical structure with cross tension legs that allows it to remain motionless despite wind, waves and ocean currents. It works by using vertical tie rods to hold a submerged volume below the natural floating line, like a double pendulum allowing only horizontal translation. Cross tie rods can neutralize horizontal forces from wind, currents and waves. The TLP foundation could support additional functions beyond power generation like aquaculture and desalination. If produced serially, TLPs could establish a new offshore industrial system based on concrete floating structures.

"Offshore floating foundation (Tension Leg Platform)
to support a multimegawatt wind turbine"
Dott. Arch. Nicola Boschetti

Abstract:
The till now unsolved question of offshore wind turbine in very deep water finds a solution:
a floating foundation (Tension-Leg Platform) will be able to support without any movement
the turbine tower. The statical principle that permits platforms immobility is the introduction
of a simmetric structure (TLP) with cross tension legs; there are three schemes that
resume how its possible to have a motionless floating structure that doesnt overturn in
spite of wind, waves and marine thrusts. The platform is considered to be able to house
lots of other activities, not only the production of electricity, so there could be fish farming,
water desalination and hydrogen production. The concrete floating structure will be a
submersible production space that serially produced will constitute a new industrial
system.

We use a tensioned leg
platform to solve the
problem of the pitch
generated by wave motion:
the volume that generates
hydrostatic thrust is held
under the natural floating
line by vertical tie rods.
The structure looks like an
enormous double
pendulum, so there are
allowed only horizontal
translations.
The structure, with its vertical
tie rods, can use the
hydrostatic thrust that goes up.
Thrusts due to the horizontal
actions (wind, marine currents
and wave motion) can be
neutralized by cross tie rods.
The mooring system geometry
permits a motionless floating
structure.
Wind thrust against rotor blades
is to be considered as an
horizontal load at the top of the
structure (represented by an
upturned T).
There will be an overturning
moment in the T bend like the
load multiplied for the torque arm
(T leg). The moment will be
counterbalanced by an equal and
reverse pair that will work along
the axis of the vertical tie rods;
couples torque arm will be the
tittle of the T. The couple is
made by one vertical vector that
goes up, and one that goes
down; only the last can work on
the tie rod, so the overturning
moment will be neutralized by the
action of only one tension leg on
which there will be a double load
with half arm (half tittle of the
upturned T) the other tie rod,
theorically, will have no load.
