Open /ircuit TestI The purpose of this test is to determine no load loss or core loss.
One winding of the transformer usually high voltage side if left open and the other is connected to its
supply of normal voltage and fre, uency. * wattmeter voltmeter and the ammeter are connected in the
low voltage winding.
5ith the normal voltage applied to the low voltage side normal flu) will be set up in the core hence
normal iron losses will occur which are recorded by the 5attmeter.
The load current on the low voltage winding will be smallG( to 1 F of rated full load current H the
copper loss in the winding will be negligible and will be nil in the high voltage side winding..
$o the wattmeter reading will represent practically the core loss under no load condition.
$hort-/ircuit TestI This is also known as .mpedance test.
.n this test the low voltage winding is short circuited by using a thick conductor Gor *mmeter which
serves additional purpose of .ndicating 3ated load currentH.
* low voltage at correct fre, uency is applied to the primary and is cautiously increased till full load current
is flowing the high voltage side.
.n this test the applied voltage is small percentage of its rated value hence flu) produced is small with
the result that iron losses will be negligible and the 5attmeter reading will represent the full load /u-loss.

14. 5orking principle of E)plosimeter;
*n e)plosimeter is a device which is used to measure the amount of combustible gases present in a
sample. 5hen a percentage of the lower e)plosive limit GLELH of an atmosphere is e)ceeded an alarm
signal on the instrument is activated. KE)plosimeterK
The device also called a combustible gas detector operates on the principle of resistance proportional to
heatLa wire is heated and a sample of the gas is introduced to the hot wire. /ombustible gases burn in
the presence of the hot wire thus increasing the resistance and disturbing a 5heatstone bridge which
gives the reading.
* flashback arrestor is installed in the device to avoid the e)plosimeter igniting the sample e)ternal to the
device.
The combustible gas indicator shown diagrammatically above consists of a 5heatstone bridge with
current supplied from a battery. 5hen the bridge resistances are balanced no current flows through the
galvanometer. One resistance is a hot filament in a combustion chamber. *n aspirator bulb and fle)ible
tube are used to draw a gas sample into the chamber. The gas will burn in the presence of the red hot
filament causing the temperature of the filament to rise. 3ise of temperature increases the resistance of
the filament and this change of filament unbalances the bridge. The current flow registers on the meter
which is scaled in percentage of L%L or ppm.

>. 2escription of camber sheer tumble home 3ise of floor by sketch
CamberI-The transverse curvature of the deck from the centerline down to the sides. This camber
is used on e)posed deck to drive water to the sides of the ship.
Sheer:- The curvature of the deck in a fore " aft directions rising from midship to the ma)imum at
the ends. .t makes a ship more seaworthy by raising the deck at the fore " after ends further from
the water and by reducing the volume of water coming on the deck.
Tumble HomeI- .n some ships the midship side shell in the region of the upper deck is curved
slightly towards the centre line thus reducing the width of the upper deck " decks above.
Rise of Floor:- The bottom shell of ship is sometimes sloped up from the keel to the bilge to
facilitate drainage. The rise of floor is very small.
(. 5hat is freeboard and reserve buoyancy ;
FreeboardI-.t is the distance from the waterline to the top of the deck plating at the side of the
deck amidships.
Reserve uo!a"c!I- .t is the potential buoyancy of a ship and depends upon the intact
watertight volume above the waterline.
5hen a mass is added to ship or buoyancy is lost due to bilging the reserve buoyancy is
converted into buoyancy by increasing the draught. .f the loss in bupyancy e)ceeds the reserve
buoyancy the 8/L will sink.
+. why tankers have less freeboard
The openings in the tankers are small than of other ship " also the permeability is more.
-. what do u mean by stability of ship. 'ow a stable ship returns to upright posn if heeled by e)ternal
force.
13
$T*!.L.TD O% $'.#I The tendency of ship to come back to its upright position when healed by
e)ternal force is defined as the stability of the ship.
5hen a ship is healed the centre of buoyancy shifts this forms a righting lever . thus the wt. of the
ship
1. what is tender and stiff ship.
Te"der Shi#:- The ship with a small Metacentric height has a small righting lever at any angle "
will roll easily is said to be tender ship. .n tender ship .n it the centre of gravity lies below the
transverse metacentre. The 6M is more than 6M. " these kind of ship are more stable.
Stiff Shi#:- The ship with a large Metacentric height has a large righting lever at any angle " has
considerable resistance to rolling. * stiff ship is very uncomfortable. .n it the /entre of 6ravity lies
above the transverse metacentre.
4. 5hat is free surface effect. 'ow knowledge of free surface effect will be useful. 'ow it is reduced
constructionally.
Free Surface Effect:- 5hen a tank of li,uid is partially filled " the mass of li,uid is moved. This
movement affects the Metacentric height. This is called free surface effect.
.f free surface effects becomes more then ship may /apsiBe.
