Project Airbus IMS

This 7-month project involves developing advanced fault detection and diagnosis techniques for civil aircraft flight control systems. The applicant should have an engineering degree in control engineering and experience with estimation theory and model-based fault diagnosis. If selected, the applicant will conduct research at the IMS laboratory in Bordeaux, France under the supervision of Professor Zolghadri. The goal is to improve industrial practices for fault detection, which could enable more sustainable aircraft designs with benefits like weight savings. Specifically, the project focuses on detecting actuator or sensor faults in control surface servo-loops.

CONTEXT
The electrical flight control system (EFCS, a.k.a fly-by-wire, FBW) ro!i"es more sohisticate"
control of the aircraft an" flight en!eloe rotection f#nctions $%&$'&. The main characteristics
are that high-le!el control laws in normal oeration allow all control s#rfaces to be controlle"
electrically an" that the system is "esigne" to be a!ailable #n"er all circ#mstances. (n arallel of
the EFCS "e!eloment, the n#mber of fail#re cases to be consi"ere" in the "esign of an aircraft
is consi"erably increasing beca#se of the growing comle)ity of e*#iment an" systems.
Similarly, the intro"#ction of EFCS le" to a n#mber of interactions with flight hysic "iscilines
in!ol!e" in the "esign of an aircraft, in artic#lar in case of fail#res.
(nno!ati!e Fa#lt +etection an" +iagnosis (F++) co#l" contrib#te to a!e the way for the f#t#re
more s#stainable an" efficient air transort $,&. The f#t#re aircraft systems will #na!oi"ably
ha!e to incl#"e inno!ati!e F++. -ot ob!io#s at first sight, it is ne!ertheless ossible to
"emonstrate that imro!ing the F++ in"#strial state-of-ractice contrib#tes to a more
s#stainable aircraft (e.g. weight sa!ing) $,&. This fact constit#tes the starting oint an" the main
moti!ation of the c#rrent ro.ect. (t sho#l" be note" that altho#gh base" on recent aca"emic
works with an emhasi/e on in"#strial alications this )or+ is strongly industrial oriented,
which means that at least it sho#l" be concl#"e" by in"#strial 010 acti!ities to assess the
!iability an" erformances of the roose" metho"s on state of the art 2irb#s facilities.
The Flight Control System (FCS) consists of all the elements locate" between the ilot in#ts in
the cockit (si"e-stick, e"als3) an" the control s#rfaces, incl#"ing these two elements, which
are #se" to control the aircraft attit#"e, tra.ectory an" see" (Fig#re %).

The toic of interest in this ro.ect is an act#ator4sensor fa#lt locate" in the ser!o-loo control
of the mo!ing s#rfaces, between the Flight Control Com#ter (FCC) an" the control s#rface,
incl#"ing these two elements. Conse*#ently, only one control s#rface is imacte". This fa#lt
case lea"s to an #nwante" "eflection of the control s#rface an" is calle" runa)ay (a.k.a.
har"o!er), Fig#re '. The control s#rface can go #ntil its stos if the r#naway remains #n"etecte".

artic#lar for str#ct#ral loa" asects an" aircraft controllability.
