Biography
It all began with notebook margins.
Allow me to explain:
Those margins call out to me with
their siren song and lure me to those
edges. I cant help but doodle along
those perimeters. I always have
and I am sure I always will.
This love for drawing started in
Puerto Rico. It has then grown and
expanded to wherever my family
has moved and traveled. My natural
(and maybe relentless) curiosity
has led to the exploration of the
creative arts.
My creative pursuits have married
technology and education. It is a
happy polyamorous relationship
that I wish to pursue, as long as I
get to keep drawing in the margins.

WNM 606: PRINCIPLES OF UX
Final Project
A test and instructional prototype of a web application for IKEA. It was a collaborative project
between Jayna Bergensen, Weston Maughan, and Sevi Taviloglu.
I was in charge of the first Test Scenario, UX/UI design, user flow, and user profile.

Abstract
Girl Talk is a comprehensive sex education
program for girls-
It uses beautiful graphics, easy to understand
language, and a dynamic presentation to
better prepare girls in their sexual education
and create more responsible adults.
Girl Talk is intended to be a detailed
program specifically for girls. The program
would combine three aspects of teaching:
a physical meeting, a tactile guide, and an
interactive application. The three part program
accomplishes to cater to all the different
methods of absorption of information to

Statement of Interest
The idea of this project was conceived in the most of unlikeliest of places.
My first real job was in an Italian pizzeria when I was 15. It was a first job for many of the lowly personnel,
bus boys, dish washers, service counters, and me, the hostess/cashier. In the camaraderie that brews in the
hectic, fast-paced environment that is counterbalanced with the semblance of perfect calm, split attentiveness,
multitasking, and repetitiveness of the inner workings of the restaurant business; we found time to discuss sex.
This was the first time that I discovered the lack of sexual education, regardless of the fact that we were a
generation that had plenty of access to the internet.
I was grateful my parents gave me a complete sexual education. This is how at my very inexperienced 15 years
of age, myself and one other peer answered questions (as best as we could) about sex.
I have been some sort of educator for the last three years. Whether its been as a private tutor, substitute
teacher, or full time teacher; I have been exposed to all ages, maturity levels, and classrooms environments. And
boy have I overheard some wildly inaccurate things!
Most of the schools in Puerto Rico do not have a sexual education program. The ones that do have an
inconsistent materials or information because some is very technical or superficial. It is also ugly and boring.
This project aims to rectify this problem. The scope of the project right now will focus on the girls, but my hope
is to expand it eventually and have a complete program.

The Girl Talk program combines a physical discussion, printed materials,
and a interactive application.
App functions:
Many sexual education programs are very technical. They are divided in three parts. The first part is
the biology of things. Learning all the medical names of the sexual organs. The second part is sexually
transmitted diseases and infections. The showing of how these diseases look like in their most extreme
form and how having sex can lead to their contraction. The third part is the final message. This last part
can be one of two options: dont have sex till marriage or put a condom on it.
Although all of the aforementioned are definitely important to a sex education course or unit, leaving
sexual education at this level is too superficial and technical. There are many parts to sex that go far
beyond than: put a condom on a penis because youll get sick and/or have a baby.
Learning the proper names of each part and how they work is essential. But knowing that there are
moments of your cycle that make you feel like an emotion/rage creature because of high progesterone
levels, which cause PMS (that peak on the 21st day of your cycle). Knowing that its okay to feel like
you cant control your emotions. That this is especially true when your body first starts to menstruate
because your hormones havent regulated yet, is a more complete picture. Girls need to know the what,
why, where, when and how. The more they understand the hows and whys of their bodies the better
prepared they are to deal with the not-so-perfectly-clear aspects of sex.
Girl Talk is focuses on teaching the biology and mechanics of sex in a comprehensive manner while
including the psychological parts of sex, hormones and how they affect your emotional state, sexual
orientation, attraction, gender identity and sexual responsibility.
Girl Talk program is divided into three modes: Print, Interactive, & Discussion.
The Discussion mode is the actual group session where the Girl Talk is goes through all the material
in person. The Print aspect which is the Girl Talk booklet guide is given to the group where the all the
material covered is given in a print format with more illustrations and the information can be reviewed.
The Interactive component is an application that includes dynamic and interactive models of the
information.
These three modes ensure that information is accesible regardless to what method of learning the
student is more susceptible to.

This site is geared towards teens and people in their twentys and has a vast array of really interesting articles and
information. The site also offers relationship advice and they have a hot line set up. They promote books, other sites,
blogs, etc. They are really a great resource. The visual aspect and actual user navigation of this site is actually quite
difficult. It seems very disorganized and confusing and you can never seem to find your way back to an article or quiz
you had previously read.

Its Your Sex Life
Mtvs IYSL is an interesting but limited site. It has some basic information, and these are endorsed
by celebrities, which would make them appealing to the same demographic, but its main focus is
that you should get tested for hiv/aids. They have interesting videos and clear articles, but they are
small and not as informative. The aesthetic quality is nice, clear and colorful heavily featuring content.
Its limited information does hinder from what could be a better sex education site.

Target Audience
Girls
The particular demographic that I chose to target is the angsty eigth
grade. I chose the eigth grade ages, which range from 12-14 years of age,
because during the eigth grade is when most sex education programs
take place. It is also the average age for girls to start experiencing puberty.

Scope
Girl Talk is an educational program that uses three methods of
teaching. These methods have been applied to other subjects
within the field of education. I wanted to apply the dynamic
component to this particular topic.
The goal of my thesis is to create prototypes of the print book
and the application. To make sure that the scope is within the
realm of reality, I will be focusing in the interactive menstrual
cycle
Tech
The book element of my thesis will focus on visual design and
developing a brand. Organizing complex information in graphics
in a language that is easy to understand.
The application will use HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, and Motion
Composer to create the over all application and the interactive
animation.
Data
All of the medical data that will be featured in the application
will be reviewed by a licensed nurse and doctor.
Visual Design
I wanted Giirl Talk to have a hand drawn feel and illustrative
aesthetic. I wanted it to be colorful and appealing, but not
childish.
The illustrations are ink and watercolor.

Conclusion
Girl Talk is a project that I am very passionate
