General
STM Centralizers are designed for optimum performance and durability. Centralizers are
tested in accordance with API specification 10D which includes testing to ascertain starting
force, running force and restoring force comparisons. We also conduct random destructive
tests as an integral part of our quality program to ensure material and workmanship are
of the finest quality.
STM maintains a data base of all API spec 10D testing which can be cross referenced to
manufacturing production.
STM, with the assi stance of a group of leading United Kingdom University professors
developed a state of the art centralizer spacing program aptly named "Latload" to support
our centralizer product range. Latload was introduced to the industry in 1999. The Latload
program calculates mathemati cal

a free service to our valued customers. Latload can be e-mailed as an attachment and
requires "Microsoft Snapshot Viewer" software to download and print. This software can
be easily downloaded free of charge from either www. microsoft.com or from our own
website www.sagatrade.co.id.
Whilst STM manufactures a standard range of centralizer product sizes and specifications
we are al ways pleased to work directly with our customers to produce custom made
products in any size to suit unique or special applications.

Non Welded Centralizers
STM's range of non weld centralizers are available in sizes from 4 1/2" through to
20" in both latch-on and slip-on configuration. The bows on the STM non weld
centralizers are securely fastened by interlocking fingers located on the end band
making the product durable and dependable.
Turbolizers
Similar construction to STM Bow Centralizers, the Turbolizer is constructed with a
series of fins to deflect drilling fluid and cement to create a spiraling motion which
improves hole cleaning efficiency and helps prevent cement channeling. All STM
turbolizers are fitted with integral stop (no other stop devices required) as a standard
feature. We do not recommend that turbolizers be fitted over casing couplings.
Rigid Centralizers
STM manufactures a full range of rigid or positive stand off type centralizers for any
casing inside casing combination. The STM rigid centralizer is manufactured from
premium grade materials for maximum durability and available in sizes from 2-3/8"
tubing up to 30" casing.
STM cement baskets are ideal for supporting cement in situations where operators
require to keep cement off the bottom of the hol e because of weak formations or
slotted liner screens. The STM cement basket is available in a wide range of casing
to hole sizes and is self centering due to it's sturdy spring steel bows. The cement
basket design features the well proven metal petal type basket component. The
design minimizes interference against casing for assisting pipe rotation and reciprocation
and comes complete with a stop collar.
Cement Baskets
STM manufactures a full range of stop
col l ars to compl ement our range of
centralizer products. STM Stop collars are
available with either grub screw or torsion
nail type positive locking mechanisms and
can be provided in either latch-on or slip-
on conf i gurat i on for close t ol erance
applications. STM stop collars undergo slip
and hold testing in accordance with API
s p e c i f i c a t i o n 10-D r e c o mme n d e d
procedures for testing as an integral part
of STM's quality program.
In addition to our standard stop col l ar
range STM manuf act ur es a range of
premium heavy duty stop collars that are
machined from seamless tubing. HD stop
collars also feature a beveled leading edge
for minimizing any mechanical interference
during running. The HD stop collar is an
ideal companion for the SLIDER-1 centralizer.

Heavy Duty Stop Collars
Wall Cleaners
S TM manufacture cable wall cleaners for any cas ing to hole combination and are
available in either s lip-on type or s lip-on with integral s top. STM cable wall cleaners
feature loops of aircraft grade flexible cable and are s uitable for cas ing or liner
reciprocation.
S lider-1 Centralizer
The S lider-1 is a unique proprietary product that addres s es and s olves many of the
problems as s ociated with centralizing cas ing in extended reach or horizontal
applications. API starting and running forces make regular bow centralizers impractical
in extended reach applications . The S lider-1 offers the benefits of a bow centralizer
in that it is flexible like a bow centralizer however The S lider-1 has zero s tarting and
running force. The S lider-1 is manufactured to full borehole s ize and therefore offers
s uperior s tand off to competitive products . Being flexible als o enables the s lider-1 to
collaps e and fully restore through under gauge hole sections, in fact due to it's unique
des ign the s lider-1 will collaps e to a s maller diameter than a typical cas ing coupling.
This feature can mean the difference between getting cas ing to the bottom or having
to pull it for a wiper trip. The s lider-1 als o features an extremely s mall cros s s ectional
area and in the case of 7" x 8 1/2" infringes upon the annulus a mere 33%. A Buttress
coupling in the s ame circums tances (7" x 8 1/2") infringes upon the annulus 41%.
The S TM S lider-1 has proven it's superiority over competitive products on many critical
North S ea E xtended R each applications . Contact us for S . P. E Paper "67197" about
S lider-1 success in Nigeria
Float Equipment
General
STM has been manufacturing high quality float equipment since 1987. In 1999 STM
successfully commissioned a state of the
art computer controlled API test loop facility
for testing float equipment. The STM test
loop is the only one of it's type in Asia and
features a high volume facility for simulating
realistic down hole conditions to monitor
erosion and other effects to float equipment
under extended circulating conditions. The
high volume component of the loop utilizes
drilling fluids to API specifications complete
wi th abrasi ve sol i ds and is capabl e of
pumping vol umes well in excess of 25
barrels per minute.
The STM test loop facility also incorporates
a hi gh t emper at ur e hi gh pr essur e
component capable of testing at sustained
temperatures in excess of 400 degrees
Fahrenheit (204 C) and pressure in excess
of 5,000 PSI for testi ng products in
accordance with API RP-10F (all categories).
Whilst the STM test loop facility was commissioned to support and enhance the STM
range of float equipment the facility can be made available for third part product testing
and verification.
Where appl i cabl e STM float equipment is manufactured by in house CNC machinery to
ensure conformity and quality. Once machined, components are individually inspected
and certified by our independent quality team. Standard STM float equipment meets or
exceeds API requirements. STM maintains a large inventory of raw material and generally
is able to manufacture components with special chemical or physical properties expediently.

To meet modern requirements for float shoes and collars to provide a positive seal
in highly deviated, horizontal, high temperature and hostile environments STM has
developed this new range of premium products capable of meeting and exceeding
these demands.
STM plunger valves meet and exceed API RPF 10F categories 3C (5,000 psi and 400
degrees F).
STM Plunger Type float equipment is avai l abl e in sizes ranging from 2 7/8" through
to 30" and is fully PDC drillable, even the valve spring is constructed from PDC
drillable materials. The STM Plunger type float collar can be supplied with optional
non rotating feature for faster drill out.
STM fl oat shoes and float col l ars both Plunger and Ball type utilize Compressa-
Strength technology. Compressa-Strength utilizes the natural compressive strength
characteristics of cement by greatly reducing shear stress points that are incorporated
in the design of wicker style products. As an integral part of the STM quality system,
float equipment insert cement samples are tested by a qualified independent laboratory
to ensure product quality and consistency.
Ball Valve
Type Float Shoes and Collars
The Ball type float shoe and float collar range is for the customers who prefer no
mechanical parts (springs) and encompasses the same Compressa-Strength shell
design as the pl unger type for maximum integrity. Ball type val ve products are
available in sizes from 4 1/2" through to 30" and are fully PDC drillable. The STM
Ball type float collar is also available with an optional non rotating feature for faster
drill out.
Cementing Plugs
(Standard and Non-Rotating)
STM offers a complete range of cementing plugs in sizes ranging from 2 7/8" through
to 20". Our premium Casing Cementing Plugs are PDC drillable with heat resistance
of 300 degrees F and are color coded with bright orange Bottom Plugs and black Top
Plugs for easy visual identification. STM Casing Cementing Pl ugs are extremely
durable with high abrasion resistance and able to withstand pressure differential of
standard float equipment. STM can also provide high temperature Cementing Plugs.
We also manufacture custom plugs to customer requirements.
STM Non-Rotating Cement Plugs are retrofitted with durable, high temperature plastic
inserts to prevent plugs from spinning whilst drilling out. A unique feature of the
STM non-rotating plugs is that the drive faces are radially mis-aligned from locating
faces so that the two components are axi al l y locked. This prevents the plug from
bouncing and spinning whi l st drilling out. The design of the locating faces also
ensures axi al positioning regardless of borehole angle.

casi ng to automatically fill
with well fluids as they are
run in the hole. The fluid
level in the casi ng will be
regul at ed to not exceed
90% of t he l evel in the
annulus if one shoe or collar
is used, and the fluid level
will not exceed 81% if both
are used. Valve components
ar e made of an easi l y
dri l l abl e al umi ni um al l oy.
Features
Circulating differential fill equipment automatically fi l l s the casing string as it is
run, eliminating the time required for surface filling and thereby reducing the possibility
of sticking the casing.
Pressure surges during running-in are significantly reduced since fluids are allowed
to enter the casing. By reducing pressure surges, formation damage and loss of
drilling fluids to the formation are minimized.
Circulation can be reestablished at any time. The automatic differential fill valve
will resume functioning when circulation is stopped and the casing is again run to
the point where the casing fluid level is less than 90% of the annul us level.
Dropping a trip ball to seat in the circulating differential fill equipment and applying
pressure to the string will convert it to conventional float equipment. When shoe and
collar are run together, one tripping ball will convert both pieces of equipment.
Performance is equi val ent to fl oat equipment perf ormance shown in Table 1.
Table 1
1. Running In 2. Circulating 3. Tripped
Operation
Running-in
As the string is run into the hole, fluid enters the circulating differential fill equipment
and flows up through the flapper releasing the sleeve, which is locked in the open
position, and then fl ows through the flapper differential pressure val ve into the
casing.
The differential pressure valve assembly consists of a differential piston and a valve
seat. The differential piston is designed so that the cross-sectional area at the bottom
of the piston is 90% of the cross-sectional area of the top. When the fluid pressure
on the top side of the differential piston begins to exceed 90% of the fluid pressure
on the bottom, it will move downward and seal on the valve seat, preventing further
flow into the casi ng. As the casi ng continues to be lowered, the fluid pressure on
the bottom of the differential piston increases until it again opens, permitting fluid
to enter the casing. This cycle is continuously repeated as the string is run into the
hole.
If both a circulating differential fill shoe and a collar are run together, the tandem
effects of both pieces of equipment will result in a casing fluid level of 81% of the
annulus level.
Circulation
Circulation can be reestablished at any time by filling the casing and pumping fluids.
When circulation is stopped, the differential pressure valve assembly will resume
functioning when the casing is run to the depth where the casing fluid level is less
than 90% of the annulus fluid level.
Tripping
To convert differential fill equipment to float equipment, a tripping ball is dropped
down the casing. A pressure of 500 to 800 psi will shear the screw holding the flapper
releasing sleeve in place, al l owi ng it to move down and release the flapper valve.
When the flapper releasing sleeve seats on the valve bottom, the dogs are forced
into a recess, allowing the tripping ball to pass through. The lower flapper and flapper
releasing sleeve are independent of the differential piston which ensures proper filling
and seating as demanded.
When two pieces of differential fill equipment are run together, the same ball will
trip both.
Deviated Holes
A ball guide insert is available and should be installed on top of each piece of
differential fill equipment, for casing sizes 7 in. through 13 3/8 in. in holes deviated
30 or more.

Stab-in, Latch-in Cementing Collar
This equipment facilitates "nippling up,' reduces cement contamination at the critical
shoe area, minimizes the problem of excess cement when trying to circulate cement
to the surface and provides for more efficient use of spacers and washes. STM stab-
in equipment is specifically designed for this application. When the stab-in shoe is
run, no other float equipment is necessary. The stab-in collar is designed to be run
in conjunction with a guide shoe and is normally placed one joint above the guide
shoe.
The design of the shoe and collar is similar. Each is equipped with a spring-loaded,
flapper float valve held open by an orifice. This orifice al l ows the casing to fill
automatically while regulating the rate of fill to prevent overflow. Above the orifice
is a seat for a latch-down plug and a retaining latch for the stab-in, latch-in device.
Operation
The casing is run into the wel l . The stab-in stinger and centralizer (optional) are
made up on the drill pipe and run into the hole.
The beveled top of the stab-in shoe or collar, and optional centralizer above the stab-
in unit, help the stinger seat in the collar or shoe, even in deviated holes. When the
stinger is seated, circulation may be established through the drill pipe and up the
annular space between the casing and the hole. A weighted ball may then be dropped
down the drill pipe and either pumped down or allowed to gravitate to the seat. A
pressure of 800 psi will pump the orifice out and release the flapper valve which
then becomes an efficient float valve. The proper amount of cement is then mixed
and pumped down the drill pipe. A flexible latch-in plug, supplied with the tool, is
used to follow the cement slurry. This plug is pumped to a shutoff. The stinger may
then be released from the stab-in collar by pulling slightly over drill-pipe weight and
then rotating six turns to the right.
The stinger may be run with or without the retaining slip. If the retaining slip is not
used, the weight of the drill pipe is used to hold the stinger in place while cementing.
In this case, no rotation is necessary to release the stinger.
Stab-in shoes or collars may be run with or without the automatic-fill orifice.

Setdown Type
For cement i ng l arge-
diameter casing through
drill pipe or tubing as
descri bed previ ousl y,
STM has designed an
economical cement float
shoe with a receptacle
located in the top of the
shoe.
Stab-in Cement Float Shoe
The same principles are utilized as those of the stab-in, latch-in shoe with these
exceptions:
(1) the stinger sub will not latch into the shoe, therefore drill-pipe weight must be
used to hold the stinger in place while cementing; (2) the stab-in, setdown does not
have a latch-in wiper plug to follow the cement as the stab-in, latch-in shoe; and
(3) the stab-in setdown has a standard ball or plunger type float valve which does not fill while
running casing.
Operation
The shoe is made up on the casing and run to setting depth. The stinger sub and
optional centralizer are made up on the drill pipe and run into the wel l . The beveled
top (receptacle) of the float shoe, and the centralizer on the stinger sub, help the
stinger seat in the shoe. When the stinger is seated, circulation may be established
through the drill pipe. Drill-pipe weight must be used to hold the stinger in place.
The required amount of cement is then mixed, pumped and displaced to the shoe.
The stinger sub is then removed from the shoe by upward movement of the drill
pipe. Ci rcul at i on may be established through the drill pipe and inside the casi ng.
Stage Cementing Collars
Two- Stage Cementing Collar
Three Stage Cementing
Description
STM stage cementing collars are used for cementing a
casing string in two or three separate stages: (1) to
reduce the circulating pressure and hydrostatic head
encountered in cementi ng and, thus, prevent the
breakdown of weak formations; (2) to reduce cement
contamination effects; and (3) to reduce the quantity
of cement required when cemented intervals are widely
separated. Stage cementing can also be used to place
a retarded slurry at the bottom of a high-temperature
wel l rather than ci rcul ati ng the slurry up to lower
temperature zones where it might not set in a reasonable
time.
The "regular method" of two-stage and also three-stage cementing consists of placing
the cement in separate operations. Two-stage cementing can be accomplished by
the "continuous method" in which both stages of cement, separated by a displacement
fluid, are placed without interruption.
Features
The troubl e-free design of the STM stage col l ar has only two moving parts.
The case, top and bottom connections, and sleeves are constructed of 4140 grade
steel whi ch i s heat - t r eat ed t o S95 physi cal propert i es ( H2S- r esi st ant ) .
Operation is achieved by the application of pressure to the casing fluid after the
plugs supplied with the stage collar have seated.
The sealing 0-rings do not pass over any ports, sheared pins or sharp edges that
could be damaging to their sealing effectiveness.
A l atch ring posi t i vel y l ocks both sl eeves i n the cl osed posi t i on.
The latch ring and groove are protected from foreign matter by seals on each side.
Opening and closing sl eeves are locked to prevent rotati on during drillout.
Opening and closing sleeves plug seats are made of easily dri l l abl e alumunium
alloy.
The STM two-stage collar and accompanying plugs are colour-coded black while
the three-stage col l ar and accompanyi ng plugs are colour-coded orange to help
assure proper order of installation and operation.
Operation
While running the casing string in the hole and during the cementing of the first
stage, the stage collar remains in the closed position. The first-stage flexible plug
passes through the stage collar without actuating the sleeves. To open the stage
collar cementing ports, a gravity opening plug is dropped and allowed to fall to the
opening sleeve seat. Pressure is then built up in the casing to shear the opening
sleeve shear screws and to move the sleeve down to expose the cementing ports.
The second-stage cement is then pumped and immediately followed with the closing
plug. The closing plug is pumped to the closing sleeve seat and pressure is applied
to shear the closing sleeve shear pins and force the sleeve down to close the cementing
por t s. The cl osi ng sl eeve is permanent l y l at ched in the cl osed posi t i on.
General
Recommended practices for primary cementing should be followed. These include
conditioning the mud, centralizing casing, and using spacers and/or chemical washes
ahead of the cement. Use of cable wall wipers and pipe movement, when cementing
the critical first stage, will help to achieve good cement bonding. Centralizers should
be used immediately above and below the stage collar. A cementing basket should
also be used below the stage collar.
STM stage cementing collars are inspected and packaged with the proper wiper plug,
gravity opening plug, closing plug and rubber seal-off plate. STM can recommend
and supply all casing hardware and services needed for stage cementing your well.

The string is made up as s hown in figure 1A, run in the hole, and the firs t-s tage
cement pumped. The first-stage cement is followed by the first-stage plug which
pas s es through the two-s tage collar without affecting it in any way. The firs t-s tage
plug is dis placed to a shutoff on the float equipment immediately below the s tage,
as s hown in Figure 1B, completing the first s tage. The s tage collar ports are then
opened by dropping the gravity opening plug and allowing it to gravitate to the
opening s leeve s eat in the s tage collar. Application of 1, 200 to 1,400 psi above
circulation pres s ure will s hift the s leeve downward, opening the cementing ports .
The s econd s tage of cement is pumped followed immediately by the clos ing plug,
as s hown in Figure 1C. Figure 1D s hows the clos ing plug dis placed to shut off on the
clos ing s leeve s eat in the s tage collar. Pres s ure has been applied to shift the clos ing
s leeve and shut the cementing ports . A minimum pres s ure of 1,500 psi above that
required to close the s tage collar. The clos ing sleeve is permanently latched in the
clos ed position, completing the s econd s tage.
C ementi n C onti nuous T wo- S ta ge g
The continuous method requires that a bypas s insert be used for s eating the first-
s tage plug. A pump-down opening plug must be used in place of the gravity opening
plug. All other equipment is the s ame as used in regular two-s tage cementing. In
Figure 2A, the first stage of cement and the firs t-s tage plug are being pumped. The
dis placement fluid, calculated to be slightly more than the casing volume between
the bypas s insert and stage collar, is followed by the opening plug. The flexible first-
s tage plug and bypas s insert allow for s ome overdis placement of the first stage to
pos itively seat the opening plug.
A spacer and the second stage of cement immediately follow the opening plug. When
the plug s eats in the s tage collar, pres s ure is applied to open the cementing ports
as s hown in Figure 2B. The s econd s tage of cement is followed by the clos ing plug
and dis placement fluid (Figure 2C).
In Figure 2D, the closing plug is shown after it has seated in the stage collar and
pres s ure has been a pplied to clos e the s ta ge collar cementing ports .
Three-Stage Cementing
The three-stage collar is identical to the two-stage col l ar except it has plug seats
wi t h l ar ger bor es t o a l l o w f r ee p a s s a g e of t he t wo - s t a g e pl ugs.
Procedures for three-stage cementing are similar to those for a two-stage cementing
job. The first and second stages can be cemented using either the regul ar or
continuous method. The third stage is cemented using the regular method. The
cl osi ng plug for the two-stage collar is special. The special two-stage closing plug
must be ordered separately for three-stage cementing.
Figure 3A shows the first stage completed and the second stage of cement being
pumped through the two-stage collar. The second stage of cement is followed by the
special two-stage closing plug. When the plug seats in the stage collar, application
of pressure will shift and latch the port-closing sleeve.
The third stage is completed (Figure 3B) by dropping the three-stage gravity opening
plug and applying pressure to the open cementing ports. The cement is then pumped
fol l owed by the three-stage closing plug. Pressure is increased to cl ose the stage
collar and complete the job. Note that the three-stage collar and plugs are color-
coded orange, whi l e the two stage col l ar and pl ugs are col or-coded bl ack.
