SQUATS

By Alfred Nuez, Jr.

Squats have always been a favourite Warhammer 40,000 army of mine since they were described in the days of first
edition. The Squats combined elements of Space Marines and Imperial uards with a couple of unique elements of their
own. !nfortunately, there does not seem to be enou"h of these unique elements for W to continue the Squats as they
are currently.
This article has several purposes. The first is to provide the Squat fans out there a code# which they can use to field an
army in any unofficial third edition 40$ battle. The second is to allow those individuals %li&e myself' who have
collected Squat miniatures and other, older 40$ miniatures to use them in battle even thou"h other armies have forsa&en
them %e."., (apiers and Tarantulas'. The final purpose of this piece is to "enerate some sales for the W )rchives
service by convincin" 40$ players to purchase Squat miniatures to fill out the ran&s of whatever Squat army they be"an
lon" a"o.
The bac&"round presented herein is a sli"ht variant from that which appeared in the old Warhammer 40,000 *ompanion
that was published durin" the hey days of first edition.

AGE OF STRIFE
The )"e of +#ploration witnessed the e#pansion of ,umanity throu"hout the "ala#y. Some colonists even ventured into
the systems that were located close to the "alactic core. The planets there became &nown as -.or"e Worlds near the
*ore- as they were rich in metallic ore of the &inds that the alactic +mpire of ,umanity needed to fuel its continual
"rowth. The colonists on these .or"e Worlds had to be very hardy as the "ravitation force on these planets were
substantially hi"her than that faced upon +arth.
Interstellar travel throu"h the Warp was essential for the movement of supplies and material between the planets near
the core and the Solar System %where the destination of processed ore was either +arth or Mars'. Warp storms are one of
the "reatest of ha/ards to spacecraft that ply their way from one system to the ne#t. Most are une#pected with varied
duration. 0ne series of storms lasted for ten thousand years and isolated the various ,uman worlds from one another.
Shorta"es of supplies and foodstuffs brou"ht forth a time of war, famine, and death. 1illions of ,umans perished in the
Solar system alone. 2urin" this time, a man of foresi"ht, &nowled"e, and e#traordinary power be"an his ascent to the
pinnacle of power. 0nce the Warp Storms abated, the +mperor sent forth his Space Marine and Imperial uard armies
to rediscover these lost worlds and brin" them into the Imperium that he had created.

REDISCOVERY
3eman (uss and his Space Wolf chapter were the first to reach the .or"e Worlds near the *ore. They discovered that
the ori"inal colonists had adapted to the conditions of their world by becomin" shorter in stature, but more powerfully
built than ,uman colonists on other worlds and +arth. It was 3eman (uss who first used the term -Squats- to refer to
these -no4lon"er4quite4,uman- people. In their ten thousand year isolation, the Squats developed into a hi"hly
mechanical and industrial society on the planets they called -,ome Worlds.- !nli&e the ,ive World societies, the
Squats had become hi"hly proficient in utilisin" waste material so as not to heavily pollute their worlds with to#ic
pollutants.
The Squats and Space Wolves hit it off well. The ferocity of the Space Wolves were a match for the tenanciousness of
the Squats and each impressed the other durin" -hunts- for the powerfully4clawed )mbulls that lived in the
under"round cavern and tunnels of the ,ome World. The potent varieties of ale brewed by the Squats played no small
part in the alliance that came out of the encounter between Space Marine and )bhuman. In fact, the Squats will only
ally themselves with either Space Wolves or Imperial uards.
In their search for the templates of ancient machinery, several )deptus Mechanicus accompanied the Space Wolf
mission to the ,ome Worlds. There they found that the Squats were utilisin" lar"e trac&ed vehicles in their minin"
operations. Some of these were modified with twin4lin&ed laser cannons mounted on their sides. These modifications
came durin" the Squat wars a"ainst 0r&ish invaders in the recent millennia. In addition, the Squats had developed an
hi"hly4efficient fuel from a semi4liquid ore they called +i&tane that they used for the lar"e industrial vehicles as well as
their two4 and three4wheeled personal and motori/ed vehicles %some of which were modified with forward4firin"
weapons'.
1oth the )deptus Mechanicus and Space Wolves were interested in usin" the templates of the Squat vehicles to further
the arsenal of the Space Marines in "eneral, as well as their fuel. The Squats were tou"h ne"otiators and not easily
intimidated. +ventually, a deal was struc& where the Squats would receive foodstuffs and other supplies %li&e discarded
weapon systems' for ore %includin" +i&tane' and the schemata for what became 3and (aiders, 1i&es, and )ttac& 1i&es.
Some Squat +n"ineers a"reed to mi"rate to the )deptus Mechanicus5 home world of Mars in order to bequeath their
mechanical &nowled"e on the 0rder.

HOE !OR"DS IN THE #$
ST
CENTURY
The Squat ,ome Worlds are places of vast mineral wealth and not much else. 0ne has to be a Squat to en6oy the
-beauty- of what could best be described as a lar"e roc& that is their planet. The surface portions of their cities or
-,olds- is considerably smaller than the vast under"round vaults and chambers where most Squats reside and labour in
the mines.
+ach Squat is a member of their respective clan or e#tended family. *lans are led by the oldest Squat &nown as the *lan
+lder. *lans that are tied to others by blood form lar"er entities &nown as 1rotherhoods. These 1rotherhoods may be
found in one ,old or across several nearby ,olds. The respective *lan +lders of the 1rotherhood comprise the *ouncil
that advises their Squat 3ord in all matters from political to military to commerce. The Squat 3ord is elected by the
*ouncil and serves for the duration of their life.
Squats revere their ancestors much as Space Marines do their 7rimarch. Those that are especially attuned to the
ancestors and endowed with "reat psychic power are the )ncestor 3ords. enerally, there is only one )ncestor 3ord in a
1rotherhood at any "iven time. )lthou"h the typical Squat lives for an equivalent of two hundred standard years, the
)ncestor 3ord may live many times lon"er. Their spiritual nature is such that )ncestor 3ords are e#empt from servin"
as a *lan +lder. When an )ncestor 3ord perishes, the psychic power of one of his nearest &in awa&ens and they succeed
their forebearer as the new )ncestor 3ord.
Squats are also similar to Space Marines in that their veteran warriors are elevated to a special status of ,eath"uards.
,eath"uards form the personal "uard of the Squat 3ord and *lan +lders. In times of war, they become the elite of the
Warlord5s army %or *ommander5s forces' as well as his body"uard. The Warlord is chosen by the Squat 3ord from
amon" the most able of the *lan 3eaders. *ommanders are the officers of the warlord and usually lead a portion of the
lar"er army.
Squat 1rotherhoods may enter into partnerships or alliances with other 1rotherhoods in an arran"ement that are called
3ea"ues. The head of a 3ea"ue is considered as a ,i"h 3ord who acts in a function similar to a 1rotherhood 3ord.
Squat 3ea"ues are hi"hly competitive. Some have even "one to blows a"ainst another to settle such mundane thin"s as
minin" claims and trade disputes. 0nly when an e#ternal threat %such as +lder or 0r&s' invades their system will Squat
3ea"ues put aside their competitive nature and 6oin to"ether a"ainst the common enemy.
