Brief course description Overview of the impact of psychological factors on health and illness and
on coping with illness,
Full course description The course will explore the application of psychological theory and
research to health issues. A main focus will be on the role of psychological
and social factors in the promotion and maintenance of health, and in the
etiology, treatment and prevention of illness. The development and
modification of significant health habits (e.g., smoking, weight control,
and exercise) will be examined. The relationship between personality,
stress and illness will be highlighted. Psychological and social factors
involved in etiology and treatment of major health problems (e.g., heart
disease, cancer, and AIDS) will be examined. The emerging field of
Psychoneuroimmunology will be introduced.
