Assignment #1 422 PDF

1. The document is an assignment for a university course on facilities design and logistics. It contains problems and solutions related to modeling grocery stores, assembly lines, and queueing systems. 2. One problem involves simulating the operation of an elevator system over 1 hour that transports 3 types of materials. The average transit time for material A and average wait time for material B are calculated. 3. The simulation finds that the average transit time for a box of material A was 17.5 minutes, the average wait time for a box of material B was 6 minutes, and 22 boxes of material C were transported in the 1 hour period.

ASSIGNMENT # 1
PROBLEMS: 1.1(b), 1.1(g) 2.3, 2.8

HELOSA GOMES BUENO

Submitted to: Dr. Walid Abdul-Kader

Date: 30/09/2014

Chapter 1: 1(b) and 1(g)
1.1 Name several entities, attributes, activities, events and state variables for the following
(b) A grocery store
Entities Attributes Activities Events State Variables
Customers Number of items
Buy grocery;
checking out
items; paying
Arrival; Departure
Number of people in
line to pay
Warehouse Capacity Withdrawing Demand
Levels of inventory;
backlogged demands

(g) An automobile assembly line
Entities Attributes Activities Events State Variables
Machines
Speed; capacity;

Welding;
Painting
Breakdown
Status of
machines (busy,
idle, or down)
Automobiles
number of parts

brakes
Arrival of parts;
Availability of
machines

Chapter 2: 2.3 and 2.8
2.3 Develop and interpret a flow diagram analogous to Figures 2.4 and 2.5 for a queueing system with I
channels.

Flow diagram for a bank:

The customer finds the teller either busy or idle; therefore the customer follows the flow of action displayed
on the diagram: if the teller is busy, then the customer go to queue; if the teller is idle, and the queue is
empty, the customer is directed to the teller.

2.8 An elevator in a manufacturing plant carries exactly 400 kilograms of material. There are three kinds of
material packaged in boxes that arrive for a ride on elevator. These materials and their distributions of
time between arrivals are as follows:
Customer-arrival event
Is the teller
idle?
No
Yes
Set teller busy
File customer in queue
Customer finish service
with teller (departure)
Is there a
customer in
queue?
No
Yes
Set teller idle
Set teller busy with first
customer in queue
Material Weight (kilograms) Interval Time (Minutes)
A 200 5+/-2(uniform)
B 100 6 (constant)
C 50 P(2)=0.33 and P(3) = 0.67
It takes the elevator 1 minute to go up to the second floor, 2 minutes to unload, and 1 minutes to return
to the first floor. The elevator does not leave the first floor unless it has a full load. Simulate 1 hour of
operation of the system. What is the average transit time for a box of material A (time from its arrival
until it is unloaded)? What is the average waiting time for a box of material B? How many boxes of
material C made the trip in 1 hour?
