DATA CENTER MONITORING

DAY1
What is Data Center?
A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such as
telecommunications and storage systems. It generally includes backup power supplies, data
communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire suppression) and
security devices. Large data centers are industrial scale operations using as much electricity as a
small town.
What is Server?
A server is a computer program that provides services to other computer programs and their users in
the same or other computers. It provides the services to the client and can connect multiple users.
What is Client?
Client is a service requester and It gets the services from the server. i.e, clients communicating with a
server via the Internet.
What is Operating System?
OS is a collection of programs, which provides the services. Basically OS is permitted to single user.
What is Kernal?
It is heart of the OS i.e. interface between hardware and software.
What are the types of OS?

Server OS: Windows NT 3.0,4.0, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows 2008.
This OS is used in Companies i.e here the employees are using to login into the
server. In this OS at a time we are able to login 3 users Maximum.
Client OS: MS-DOS, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 &8. Here at a time
we can able to login 2 users Maximum.
What are the data communication connections?
Switch: It is a network device, it filters and forwards packets between LAN
segments. It operates at a data link layer and sometimes network layer of OSI
Reference model.
Router: A device that forwards data packets along the network. A router is
connected to atleast 2 Networks commonly 2 LANs/2 WANs/2 MANs.
Hub: It is having common connection point/node/port for devices in a network.
When a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to other ports.

What is DCM?
DCM means data center monitoring, here we are going to monitor the
alerts/events. Here we are getting the alerts directly from the server only. Data
center monitoring describes the process of automatically scanning the servers in
a data center for failures. Data center monitoring allows administrators to
identify issues and fix unexpected problems before they can impact end-user
productivity.
What is SLA?
It means Service Level Agreement, i.e, the agreement between client and
company/organisation. It consists the process of alerts. This SLA is having full
process of alerts in clear format. Client will provide the SLA and it consists alert
response time, to whom we have to assign the incident/ticket, rule and
regulations of the alert. By using this SLA we are giving the severities to the alert
depending upon impact of the alert.
Sev 1-- >1hr
Sev 2-- >4hr
Sev 3-- >1day

What is SLO?
It means Service level Object i.e, Agreement between support team to operation
team. Company will provide this document. It consists resolution time of the
alert.Based on this also we are giving severities.
Sev 1-- >15min
Sev 2-- >30min
Sev 3-- >45min/1 hr
What are the types of Monitoring?
2 Types.
1.DCM
2.Application Monitoring: Here we need to monitor only single
application. Here we are getting the alerts directly from application. Here we
should understand the basic technical/code. In this AM, depending upon return
codes only we are going to monitor the alerts. For this we use Scheduling tools
i.e, CA7,OPC(open system),Control-M.
Note: Major servers are built by IBM.
