IMEGS) TO ORDER CALL: 1-800-533-9298 WEB: MLCSWOODWORKING.COM M.OSLID, PO, BOKACEOG, FOAL PA, Oks amma 19.95 Ml $189.95Unplugged I saw Paul Blevin’s letter in the December issue of Woodwork magazine, and have some thoughts to offer: 1. Go to your library and get out every book you can find on handtool ‘woodworking. You may also want to buy some. Peter Korn’s The Woodworker's Guide to Handtools is a good recent one, but there are others. Another I highly recommend is Planecraf. 2. Ifyou've got Internet access, find a handtool woodworking forum you like, and visit it. 1 like www. woodcentral. com, Its a friendly forum, less oriented to.ollecting and more to using the tools 3. Ifyou can find someone who works with handtools, approach him/her for advice, Just don’t take what you hear as absolute gospel. 4. With handtools, you must be far ‘more conscious than with power tools of ‘wood characteristics. There's no way to understand this, really, except practice. 5. Youll have a basic choice in actual- ly buying tools: used or new. You can make different decisions on different tools, but the basic trade offs are fairly simple. Used: less money, more time. New: more money, save time. The differ- ence in cost between (decent) new and used is pretty startling, but if your time is limited, it can be a better way to go. Don't spend any big money until you've absorbed some of the basics in your reading and other research. Bill Houghton. via email Paul J. Blevins asks the question “what would be the ideal tools for a basic unplugged workshop?” One of my stan- dard answers is “It depends.” It depends ‘on how much space is available, your budget, what you make (large objects? small boxes?) As these are unknowns, I will have to go blind. Here is my mi malist set of handtools: a smoothing plane, water stones, a Japanese dozuki saw, a Japanese dovetail saw, sandpaper, and glue. You can make many fine ‘objects with just this simple set of hand~ tools, and elbow grease ‘Tom Atkinson via email Paul, you are so lucky! You are closer to more handtool information and edu- cation than most, The first and most obvious is Highland Hardware in Atlanta; they provides many quality one~ and two-day classes focusing on hand- tool woodworking. Woodcraft Supply in Norcross has fewer general handtool classes, but provides many in carving ‘wood. My personal favorite is John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown ‘North Carolina. Campbell is more of an environment, providing week-long ‘courses in a campus setting in the moun- tains of NC. It’s only about two hours from the Atlanta area. ‘Thom Trail Powder Springs, Georgia eC Coe es Cracked In his excellent article on “Curating Contemporary Wood Art,” [Woodwork, February 2004), Kevin Wallace remarks about a piece by David Ellsworth that “the pith expanded, causing the wood to crack,” More accurately, I think, the ‘wood surrounding the pith shrank (the pith did not), causing the wood to crack. ‘Thank you for an excellent magazine. Jack Nissen via email More on ATMOW Tye been a subscriber for several years now and have never found a reason to add my two cents, but reader John ‘McAlister’ letter in the December 2003 issue really struck a nerve. Previously, I thought I was the only ‘one who found much of the “furniture” WooDworK 6 APRIL 2008 you portray in Woodwork just plain strange. I’m highly educated, but per- haps I’m just not cultured enough to appreciate furniture that makes me say, “What the hell is that?” The picture accompanying Mr. McAlister's letter shows that with enough glue and kin- dling wood, you can make just about anything, but Pd rather light a fire with it than waste all that glue, All in all, T must agree that it’s in the ‘ye of the beholder, and I'm surely not saying that the craftsmanship is bad, but I question the usefulness of many of the pieces depicted in your pages. I can't imagine finding such pieces of wood- work in the average home. I'd like Woodwork more if you concentrated on more traditional stuff [must be crotchety, too, even if Lam 4 quarter-century younger than Mr. McAllister. I intend no offense, but you did invite comments, Doug Alderman Herndon, Virginia Pm writing to share my thoughts on the discussion of Gord Peteran’s “A Table “Made of Wood!” in the December issue Yes, there can be no doubt that beau- ty is in the eyes of the beholder... But that’s a good thing. A very good thing. It’s what brings such incredible diversity to every aspect of out lives and is totally harmonious with the human spirit. For Christmas every year I receive a gift subscription to another woodwork ing magazine. When it arrives every ‘month I can polish it off in about half an hour. The articles are predictably repeti- tive, the projects crafty and unimagina- tive (to me). Your magazine, on the other hand, isa celebration of fine woodwork ing in all its guises. I find myself return- ing to each issue again and again. Why? Because of the tremendous variety of inspirational projects. ‘Would I make the table in question? No. But does that mean it shouldn't appear in your pages? Absolutely not. ‘The more variety the better. I applaud you for searching out the incredible range ‘of projects that you do. Its the single best thing about the magazine (to me). Would [like you to run a picture of the chest-of-drawers being made by Mr.McAlister? 1 sure would. Was he being (as he put it) a so and so? I don’t know about that, but being close-minded is his loss. Too bad. Keep up the great work! Scott Barrie Scott Schmidt have spent the last 17 years employed in various woodworking jobs, and have maintained my own personal shop all the while. I have always considered my shop as a place of exploration and creativity, fice of the stress and deadlines faced on the job. At home, I never have to cut comers to maintain profitability, take risks to meet deadlines, spend more time cajoling subcontractors, employees, suppliers, and customers than I do at the bench. Finding the balance between the reasons we love being in the shop and the needs of running a business is the most important discussion we can have. For me, it has been the decision to be both a professional woodworker at work and an artist at home. Scott Schmidt's decision to find another way to make a living so that he can continue to enjoy woodworking is one that many have faced, Just look at the top names in woodworking todays many are teachers, authors, or business people who earn a living at woodworking-related fields, but not primarily as woodworkers. The very best in our field make only what an average doctor does. The pressures of making ends meet for the rest of us often leads to choi we never wanted to make. I hope that your readership can add to the discussion in how they have bal- anced professional needs and per- sonal fulfilment in the workshop. Graham T. Burbank ‘We welcome and encourage your leters in esponse to anything you read in ‘the magazine.
