Quality Control Report

Purpose - To establish a Quality Control report format for MLRA Soil Survey Office
Leaders in Region 8.
Background - This outline establishes a consistent report format with required signatures
for all assists, progress reviews, and final field reviews. Historically, reports documenting
decisions range from nonexistent to lengthy and may not contain appropriate concurrence or
approval.

PURPOSE:
To conduct a Progress Field Review or Soil Assist of Anywhere Soil Survey Area, State, (SSAID), month,
day, year.
PARTICIPANTS:
List all participants, titles, locations.
BACKGROUND AND STATUS:
Date last review or assist was held. Acres reported to date.
ACTIVITIES:
Briefly describe each days activities such as Tuesday and Wednesday were spent in the field reviewing
proposed map units. Thursday was spent in the office evaluating the legend and documenting decisions,
etc.
OBSERVATIONS AND DECISIONS:
Examples:
1. Nine new map units were approved.
2. The proposed Alpha, Beta and Gamma series will be submitted to the Region 8 Leader for review
and processing by (date).
3. The next scheduled PFR will be on (date).
COMMENDATIONS:
Briefly describe commendable activities, if any who, what, where, when.

CERTIFICATION:
The work to date meets standards of the National Cooperative Soil survey (NCSS) as contained in the
NRCS General Manual, Soil Survey Manual, National Soil Survey Handbook, Soil Survey Laboratory
Methods Manual, Soil Taxonomy, and Region 8 Operating Procedures.

Stop 1: Objective is to briefly describe the soil-landscape, components, decisions, technical issues, needs, follow-up,
approval, etc. Justify the need for new series and/or map unit and describe the relationship to adjoining series/map
units. Describe soil performance and why this new unit is needed. Document concurrence from other affected MSSO
Leaders for all new series. Include agreed competing differentia to be used in the OSD. Document the number of
transects, pedon descriptions, acre extent, and field sheet/quad number. Stop 2, Stop 3, etc.
