Challenge

Cause

PerformanceExpectations

DuetowayDataDomainactivelydeduplicates,storesandrehydratesblocksoperationswithinVeeamBackup&Replication
maybelimitedbytheoverheadthattheseactivitiesrequire.Thiscanimpactoperationsthataredesignedforproduction
storagebytheirnaturearehighlytransactionalorrequirerandomI/O.

OperationsthatutilizetheDataDomainasareplacementforproductionstoragewillbelimitedbythespeedatwhichthe
DataDomaincanactivelydeduplicateinboundblocks.

IfDDBoostisnotlicensedandtheDataDomainappliancemustbeaddedasarepositoryunderconventionalmethodsitis
advisedtouseaLinuxserverwiththevolumemountedviaNFSasarelayservertohelpimproveperformance.UsingSMB
sharewillprovideacceptable,butlowerperformance.

Solution

Restores

Allrestoreswilloccurasfastastheenvironmentcanacceptnewinformation,andasfastastheDataDomaincandeliverthe
data.

Thefollowingarespecialconsiderations:

InstantRecovery
ThistypeofrestorecanbeeffectedadverselybytheaforementionedlimitationsofaDataDomainappliance,and
dependingonthetypeofVMbeingrestored.HighlytransactionalVMswillrequiremoreIOPSfromtheDataDomain
thanothers.Withthisinmindyoucanexpect,dependingonDataDomainmode,toonlybecapableofrunningonly
fromonetoafewInstantRecoveriessimultaneously.InstantRecoveredVMsthatarestartedfromabackupfilestored
onaDataDomainmayreactorstartslowlyasthemajorityoftheirreadoperationswillbehinderedbythelimited
rehydrationperformanceoftheDataDomain.
ForVMwareusersitishighlyadvisedwhenperforminganIRthattheuserselecttohavevirtualdiskupdates
redirectedtoahighperformanceDatastore.Thiswillassistinimprovingsomeperformance.
ForVMwareusersitisadvisedthatiftheVMisintendedtobemadepermanentthatthemigrationstepbebegunas
soonaspossible.
PerforminginstantVMrecoverieswillconsumeDataDomainsystemresources,whichmayimpactperformanceof
otheroperatings(i.e.ingest,replication,cleaning,etc).
FileLevelRestores
Thebackupbrowsermaytakelongerthanusualtoopenifanincrementisselectedandfurthermorebythat
incrementsdistancefromthefullrestorepoint.
NavigatingbetweenfolderswithintheBackupBrowsermaytakeadditionaltimeaseachfolderscontentmust
retrievedfromthebackupfiletodisplayit.

BackupandBackupCopy

WhennotusingaDDBoostenableRepositorysyntheticandtransformoperationsmayhavediminishedperformance
duetoreadandwritelimitations.
FormoreinformationregardingBackupJobsettingspleasereference:

SpecifictoBackupjobs,reversedincrementalisnotsupported.
SpecifictoBackupjobsuseoftheForeverIncrementalbackupmethodisonlyadvisableinsituationswhereretention
willbelessthan30points.Ifyouintendonretainmorerestorepointsthan30itisadvisedtoenabletheActiveFull
optionandconfigureittocreateanewactivefullmonthly.Thiswillreducerestoretimesbysegmentingeachmonth

intoitsownbackupchain.

RepositoryConfiguration

WithDDBoost:

IfyourDataDomainislicensedforDDBoostpleaseproceedtoconfigureitusingthefollowingsteps.

1. LaunchthecreationofanewRepository,ontheTypetabselectDeduplicationstorageappliance.
