Essay Questions (Ch. 20) 1 Populist Movement

The document summarizes several topics in American history around the late 19th century: 1. The Populist movement supported free coinage of silver to help farmers pay off debts, sought shorter work hours and railroad regulation, and was concentrated in the agricultural West. Republicans opposed the populists to protect businesses and back the gold standard. 2. The gold standard tied currency to gold reserves, which Republicans advocated for, while populists preferred silver which was more abundant. 3. Socialists and capitalists disagreed on the role of government intervention in the economy for the good of society versus private interests. 4. The Depression hurt everyone through debt and declining markets, especially industrial workers who organized strikes that sometimes turned violent
