Quick Way To Install Telephone PABX
Quick Way To Install Telephone PABX
What is PABX? PABX or Private Automatic Branch eXchange is a telephone system with a
switchboard to allow a single access number to offer multiple lines to outside callers while providing a
range of external lines to internal callers or staff.
HARDWARE INSTALLATION
The scope of installation start from telephone terminal, extension, to main panel; this job
including placement of telephone outlet, install socket, connecting the telephone wire from the terminal
to the Main Distribution Frame (MDF).
Several technical terms in this job such as:
PAIR is the denomination (not amount) of telephone wire. Installation of 1 terminal needs
at least 1-pair cable.
TERMINAL BOX is a connector between subsidiary cable with distribution cable. It can be
CONNECTION METHOD
To connect telephone cable, especially in terminal box with huge capacity, we need to plan it carefully
to avoid confusion due to tangled cables in the future. Let's get in depth!
Telephone cable usually created from 2 twisted-pair consists of Blue-Red-Black-White color. If the
cable is 10-pair, then it must be formed from 5 pieces of 2-pair cable; made with different color for the
first cable.
For example, if we connect a 10-pair cable to the LSA, then we will get this color formation:
| BLUE-Red | Black-White | ORANGE-Red | Black-White | GREEN-Red | Black-White |
CHOCOLATE-Red | Black-White | GRAY-Red | Black-White |
Aside of colors, several cables using dot or stripe to mark the cable.. But this kind of cable usually is
used as indoor cable to connect PABX Switchboard to Amphenol 25-pair.
SUPPORTING TOOLS
Several tool that we need to install this connection are:
Insertion Tool is used to connect cable into LSA terminal
Disconnection Plug is used to cut the connection inside LSA so we can detect any shortage
Test Cord is used with either AVO Meter or Telephone
Arester is a protector against voltage leak

MAIN DISTRIBUTION FRAME
MDF or Main Distribution Frame is a cabinet where all connections meet, either from inner branch or
connection from outside (Co-Line). MDF has 2 side of connections, 1 side for cable that come from
Terminal Box, IDF or Telecommunication Provider; while the other side is pure from all PABX
telephone. Those 2 sides is joined using jumper that made from twisted pair cable. Arester will be put
on each cable that has high potential struck by lightning. We also need to apply label including detail
information to every cable and terminal to make installation and maintenance in the future easier.
To do installation in the PABX side, usually each machine has come with manual book that includes
brief explanation about the hardware, component name, and how to operate the software. The common
PABX in the market at the moment is using Amphenol 25-pair with RJ61 (4-pair) cable.
Basically telephone installation is just connect the SLT Telephone to the PABX using cable 1-pair with
any branch. The modern PABX has been developed from just telephone system to IP-Phone system. So,
it can also be used as a router, hub, or switch like any normal computer network. Each telephone unit
can connect to computer using VSDL technology, so it can save cable that are needed for the
installation compared to conventional installation.
