Question:

Cooling load calculation:

Calculation for Date: 17:00/12th April (Max Temperature in Bangladesh)
-Floor No: 4th Floor
-Area: 8X5 m2
-Height: 3m
-partition walls (NORTH,WEST, EAST & SOUTH): 127mm brick with 25 mm plaster on both sides
- Roof: Type 4, 50 mm insulation without suspended ceiling
-window: (1.5X3) m2 window on south and east side of 13 mm thickness, Overall heat conductance is
2.86 W/m2K
-Air exchange rate: 1per hour
-lights and occupants from 8 to 18 hour
-Average: light density: 25 W/m2 fluorescent light
-One occupant (sitting) using one computer.

Answer:
Heat Conduction Through Surfaces:
1. Heat Conduction Through Shaded partition/Surfaces
Q= U X A X (TD)
2. Heat Conduction through sunlit partition/surfaces
Q=U X A X (CLTD)
Here U=overall heat conductance (W/m2 k)
TD=dry bulb temp. difference across the surface (k)
CLTD=cooling load temperature difference(k)

Determining Overall conductance:

ROOF : Given type4, 50mm insulation without suspended ceiling
From Table 12a
For type4 , code no of layers A0,E2,E3,B5,C12,E0
Now from table16
A0=outside surface resistance R=0.059
E2=12mmslag or stone, R=0.099
E3=10mm felt or membrane R=0.05
B5=25mm insulation R=0.587, But we have to consider 50mm insulation so we
take B6=50mm insulation R=2X0.587=1.173.
C12=50mm heavy weight concrete R=0.029
E0=inside surface resistance R=0.121
So we have total Rth =1.531
So Uroof =1/Rth =0.653

PARTITION WALLS :
They are made of 127mm brick with 25mm plaster on both sides. So from table 16 we get
C4=100 mm common brick, K=0.727
Therefore R2=L/k =0.127/0.727=0.175
& E1=20mm plaster ,K=0.7277
Therefore R3 =R1= L/k=0.025/0.7277=0.0343
& for outside surface resistance R0 =0.059
For inside surface resistance Ri=0.121
So So we have total Rth =R0+R1+R2+R3 +Ri=0.4236
So Upartition =1/Rth =2.36

DETERMINING HEAT CONDUCTION THROUGH ROOF:

Calculating CLTD for Roof:
ASHRAE provided CLTD for JULY 21 , Location 400 N latitude from
Table 12(b)-for roof without suspended ceiling at 17:00h=CLTD=37oC

For our case we need corrected CLTDc(corrected CLTD)

Now CLTDc={(CLTD+L.M)k+(25.5-Ti)+(To,av-29.4)} X f
Here ,we take color adjustment factor, k=1.0 (for dark color)
Latitude and month correction, for Roof L.M=0.00
We have Tmax=33oC & daily range is 9oC to 11oC
So Tmin=22oC & To,avg=27.5oC
So for Roof CLTDc={(37+0.0)1+(25.5-25.5)+(27.5-29.4)}1=35.1oC

Cooling Load for Air Exchange :

Room temperature, Ti =25.5oc and Outside Temperature T o=33oC
Air exchange per hour , ACH=1.0
So, Volume of air exchange per hour , V=5X8X3 = 120m3 per hour=0.0333 m3 /s
Now in side room humidity RH=50% , & Tdb=Ti=25.5oC
So we get wi=0.01 kg moisture/kg air
For outside the room Tdb=To=33oC & Twb=27oC
So we get wo=0.02 kg moisture/ kg air

Now

A) sensible heat gain Qs = CpV(To-Ti) = (1200 J/m3 k) X 0.0333 m3/s X (33-25.5)K =299.7 W
B) latent heat gain Ql= hfgV(w0-wi) = (3010X103 )J/m3 X 0.0333 m3 /s X (0.02-0.01) =1002.33 W

Heat Gain Due to Occupants:

For one occupant in the room & considering moderate office work from table28
Sensible heat Qs =75 W per person
Latent heat Ql = 55W per person

Heat Gain Due to Equipments :

Heat gain for one computer in the room Q=P X CLF = 200W X 1=200W
Here we CLF=1 for appliances .
Heat Gain due to Light :
Q= PL X BF X D X CLF={25 W/m2 X (5X8)m2 } X1.2 X 1 X 0.85 =1020 W
Here BF=Ballast Factor =1.2 for fluorescent light
D =Diversity factor =assuming 1
CLF=0.85 (From Table 22,23,24)
