Educational Aim
This class aims to aims to give an introduction to the governing principles of geotechnical engineering, in particular stress and
settlement analysis and groundwater flow

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the class the student is expected to be able to
LO1 Understand mechanisms underlying water flow in the ground and predict pore-water pressures under steady-state flow
conditions
LO2 Understand the concept of effective stress in saturated soils and characterise the soil stress state resulting from hydraulic
and mechanical loading
LO3 Understand mechanisms underlying soil consolidation and predict pore-water pressures/settlements under transient
conditions
LO4 Understand water flow and consolidation laboratory testing and be able to derive soil parameters

Syllabus
The class will teach the following:
Topic 1: Water flow in soils.
Occurrence of water in soils Darcys law for water flow
The permeability of soils and permeability tests.
Water flow theory (homogenous media)
Introduction to flow nets and vector calculus revision
Water flow in heterogeneous media
Uplift pressure and critical hydraulic gradient
Uplift pressure in geotechnical applications
Topic 2: Consolidation and Settlement Analysis.
Oedometer test
Primary and secondary consolidation
Theory of 1-D consolidation
Soil compressibility
Pre-consolidation pressure and normal/overconsolidated states
Settlements in elastic media
Topic 3: Water flow and consolidation testing
Laboratory determination of hydraulic conductivity
Field determination of hydraulic conductivity
Laboratory determination of consolidation coefficient
Laboratory determination of 1-D compressibility

Assessment of Learning Outcomes

Criteria
For each of the Class Learning Outcomes the following criteria will be used to make judgements on student learning:
[Note: Criteria break the LO down into teachable elements but do not become syllabus orientated i.e. no mention of CAD
package names, components etc.]

LO1 Understand mechanisms underlying water flow in the ground and predict pore-water pressures under
steady-state flow conditions
C1 Calculate hydraulic conductivity from laboratory 1-D tests
C2 Draw hydraulic head and pore water pressure profiles under 1-D flow in layered soil
C3 Draw 2-D flow net in homogenous soil and calculate flow rate and pore-water pressures
LO2 Understand the concept of effective stress in saturated soils and characterise the soil stress state resulting
from hydraulic and mechanical loading
C1 Calculate effective stress profiles under static water conditions
C2 Calculate effective stress profiles under steady-state flow conditions
LO3 Understand mechanisms underlying soil consolidation and predict pore-water pressures/settlements under
transient conditions
C1 Calculate pore-water pressure time evolution in consolidating clay deposit
C2 Calculate degree of consolidation of clay deposit
C3 Calculate consolidation and final settlements
LO4 Water flow and consolidation testing
C1 Determine hydraulic conductivity from 1-D flow testing
C2 Determine hydraulic conductivity from field test methods
C3 Determine consolidation coefficient from oedometer testing
C4 Determine 1-D compressibility from oedometer testing

The standards set for each criterion per Class Learning Outcome to achieve a pass grade are indicated on the
assessment sheet for all assessment.

12 Principles of Assessment and Feedback

(on Learning & Teaching web pages: www.strath.ac.uk/learnteach/teaching/staff/assessfeedback/12principles/ )
Please state briefly how these are incorporated in this class.
3 Deliver high quality feedback information that helps learners self-correct.
Feedback is provided in real-time in an interactive fashion. Students are asked to solve problems of different level of
complexity during the lecture and the lecture is tuned to the gaps shown by the students
4 Provide opportunities to close any gap between current and desired performance.
Exam simulation is carried out during the term
7 Facilitate the development of self-assessment and reflection in training
In tutorials sessions, students are asked to become teachers by explaining tasks
12 Provide information to teachers that can be used to shape teaching.
We make use of mid-term questionnaires design to possibly adjust teaching approach
