Quadcopter Project Proposal

Oliver Cai proposes a project to build a quadcopter for aerial photography. The quadcopter would be remotely controlled or use an autopilot and be large enough to carry cameras or other payloads. Oliver has experience with model aircraft and wants to combine his hobby with ECE skills. He cites popular use of quadcopters as research platforms due to simple mechanics but challenges of PID control software/hardware. Oliver initially planned this as personal project but seeks sponsorship from IEEE and companies as he cannot fully fund components. The finished quadcopter could be used by IEEE for competitions, unique photography, or other applications as an educational tool. Milestones include ordering components in 2-3 weeks, assembly in 1-2 weeks overlapping

Quadcopter Platform for Aerial Photography

Project leader: Oliver Cai

Introduction
What is the tangible outcome of your project? Simply, what are you making?
The final result of this project would ideally be a quadcopter which can be controlled
through remote control or autonomously through an on-board autopilot. The aircraft is a
large enough size to also carry a small or medium sized payload such as a camera for
aerial photography or a variety of other modules for tasks. It can also be expandable to
many other forms of multirotors, including Y-6, hexa, or an octocopter if needed in the
future.

Why are you starting this project?

I have experience with building and flying model aircraft, and this project combines my
passion in both my hobby and the ECE field. Recently, quadcopters, or any type of
multirotor, have become increasingly popular as an experimental and research platform
due to the relatively simplistic mechanical nature of the aircraft design. However, the
challenges come into play with the control theory behind the aircraft, as the most
commonly used PID controller model requires software and hardware implementation.
Fortunately, there are a variety of open-source flight controllers in the market that utilize
this model so there is a good starting point as well as possibilities for customization. I
initially thought of making this a personal project, but since I do not have the funds to
purchase all the components I would like this project to be sponsored through IEEE and/or
any interested companies. I am willing to cover the cost of the radio transmitter and
receiver. Once this platform is finished, it can be used by IEEE not only as an aircraft but
perhaps as a robot in competitions, a unique camera platform, or other forms as a
learning tool.

Goals / Milestones
What are your project milestones?
Order Components (2-3 weeks)
Assembly (1-2 weeks), this will likely overlap with ordering components depending on
when they arrive
Flight Testing (1 week)
