Hyperion ASO Vs BSO

This document provides an overview of the differences between Block Storage Option (BSO) and Aggregate Storage Option (ASO) in Oracle Essbase. It discusses the functional, technical, and optimization differences between BSO and ASO. Examples are provided for when each option would be more suitable for IT and finance use cases. Real-world use cases for each option are also described. The document concludes with a discussion of integration differences between BSO/ASO and planning tools like EPMA as well as questions from the audience.

How Many of you are currently Essbase Users?

How many currently use BSO?
How many currently use ASO?
How many have no idea what ASO or BSO
means?
How many of you are from Finance?
How many of you are from IT?

BSO General Info

BSO = Essbase Block Storage Option

Original Essbase Version
Strong Calculation Engine
Even has tengental curve functions

Very good for allocations

Not scalable to very large data sets

ASO General Info

ASO = Essbase Aggregate Storage Option

Newer Version of Essbase
Debuted in Essbase version 7

Handles larger data volumes

Better for analysis of more members

What are you trying to

Accomplish?
Analyze existing data from a Data Warehouse?

Sales across markets and demographics

Marketing impacts by type and demographic
Vendor Analysis On Time delivery vs Cost vs Quality
Production Line analysis of up time and runtime efficiency
Supply Chain Analysis Usage Time of Vehicles, On Time
delivery metrics or route efficiency

ASO

Calculate new data for Analysis?

Allocation of costs across product lines or divisions
Charge back models
Predictive modelling trying to calculate future activity

BSO

Technical Differences
Sizing
ASO is smaller on the disk
BSO aggregates more information and stores it

Calculation Capabilities
ASO basic mathematics across existing members
Did not have inline calculation (calcscripts) until 11.1.2
Still in its infancy
11.1.2 gave ability to create Allocations
Many restrictions Not as powerful as BSO

BSO Advanced mathematics COS curve etc

Inline calculations (calcscripts) give it a much higher range of
functionality and power to create data

An Example for IT
1st is: Dimension, Dimension, Measure Key,
Data

2nd is the measures as column names

To determine what Essbase is right for you think of how your

fact table is laid out Option 1 goes best with BSO, Option 2
goes best with ASO

An Example for Finance

How are you consuming the data?
Are you taking large amounts of data out of the
database to create other reports?
ASO

Is your solution for budgeting or forecasting?

BSO

Does your solution require allocations or

eliminations?
BSO

Is you data volume extremely large?

ASO

Real World Example - ASO

Online Ringtone Vendor
Analyze data warehouse information
Frequent Refresh of Data 10 minute interval
Many cross sections with lots of detail

Artist
Title
Age Demographic
Carrier
Resulted in large Meta model

Real World Example - BSO

Financial Loan Originator and Servicer
Cost Allocation Model
Infrequent Data Refresh Once a month
Analyze Vendor relationship and Product Detail
across channels
Creation of data within and across dimensions
Chargeback of Internal Costs
Allocation of internal Costs to products and Vendors
based on Drivers

Agenda & Topics Draft

Integration Differences
EPMA has limitations with BSO
1 app to 1 database
EPMA was built to handle ASO and retrofitted to handle BSO
This highlights something important Oracle wants to get rid of
BSO but cant duplicate its functionality in ASO and is having
trouble doing that. Original plans were to be done with BSO by
now.

OBIEE & ASO or BSO?

Have seen issues where OBIEE cannot create the correct
MDX logic for either but Financial Reports, Smart View or
Excel Add-in can create the query
