BB Turbo Installation

This document provides installation instructions for a Garrett ball bearing turbocharger. It details the recommended mounting position of the turbocharger and warns that the wastegate actuator will require recalibration if housing positions are altered. It also specifies the required oil supply pressure, size of supply and drain pipes, and warns that the oil supply fitting must be correctly installed to prevent bearing damage.

Garrett Ball Bearing

Turbocharger Installation

Please read all instructions before commencing installation

Mounting Position
The Axis (refer Figure A) of the Turbocharger Turbine Shaft should be within 10 of
horizontal
Avoid loads imposed by misalignment, vibration, shock and thermal expansion when
attaching or connecting items to the Turbocharger
The Turbine Housing and Compressor Housings can be repositioned to suite different
applications by loosening the Clamp Bolts, V band or Circlip/Retainer that secure each
Housing and rotating the respective Housings to the position required
When altering Compressor or Turbine Housing positions on a Internally Wastegated
Turbocharger greater care should be taken, first disconnect the Actuator Rod End from
the Wastegate Crank Assembly on the Turbine Housing, once moved or disturbed the
Wastegate Actuator Assembly will require re-calibration, relocation of the Actuator
mounting point may be required. (if not re-calibrated correctly engine damage may
occur)
Once the Housings are positioned as required it is important that the Clamp Bolts, V
Band or Circlip/Retainers are re-tensioned correctly, to prevent miss-alignment of
Housings DO NOT attach any hoses or pipping until the re-tensioning process is
complete

Water Cooling
To minimize the effect of Heat Soak and enhance Turbocharger durability Water
Cooling must be connected
The cooling process continues after engine shutdown through the Thermal Siphon effect
associated with a correctly connected Water Cooling System, this means the water
supply should come from the cold side of the vehicles cooling system and the return to
the hot side

Flanges and Fittings

Avoid the use of Silicon or other Sealants on Oil Supply Flanges or Fittings, excess use of
these materials may cause oil supply restriction or blockage

Oil Supply (Item 1 Figure A)

Minimum Oil Supply Pressure at Low Idle = 0.70 Kg/cm2 or 9.96 psi
Minimum Oil Supply Pressure at Peak Torque Speed = 2.17 Kg/cm2 or 30.87 psi
Minimum inside Diameter of Oil Supply Pipe = 4 mm
An Oil Inlet restrictor is recommended if maximum Engine Oil Pressure exceeds 60 psi
The Turbocharger Oils supply to be filtered by a Full Flow Filter of 20 Micron
Maximum Rating
On all Ball Bearing Turbocharger Models the Oil Supply Fitting must seat against the
Bearing Locating Pin at the base of the Oil Inlet Port (refer item 1 Figure A) without
restricting oil supply to central oil gallery
Incorrect installation of the Oil Supply Fitting will cause the Bearing Location Pin to
come out, allowing excessive axial movement of the Bearing Cartridge resulting in
Wheel contact with Housings and severe Turbocharger damage

Oil Drain (Item 2 Figure A)

The Inside Diameter of the Oil Drain Pipe should be no smaller than the Centre Housing
Oil Drain Port (Item 2 Figure A)
It is important the Oil Drain Pipe face downward WITHOUT sharp bends, reductions
in Inside Diameter of Pipe, Kinks, becoming horizontal or going uphill at any point
The Oil Drain Port/Flange Face can be rotated within 35 of horizontal
Note; an incorrectly installed Oil Drain Systems will cause the Turbocharger to leak oil
