1. NI LabVIEW Electrical Power Suite

The NI LabVIEW Electrical Power Suite helps you develop a custom three-phase power monitoring, metering, or quality analysis
application. The following analysis functions are included with the Full version of the NI LabVIEW Electrical Power Suite and
conform to the IEC 61000-4-30:2008 standard:
Power Frequency
Magnitude of the supply voltage
Flicker
Supply voltage dips and swells
Voltage interruptions
Supply voltage unbalance
Voltage harmonics
Mains signaling voltage on the supply voltage
Rapid voltage changes (RVC)
Measurements of underdeviation and overdeviation parameters
The following analysis functions conform to the EN 50160:2007 standard:
Power measurement
Energy measurement
Aggregation (demand)

includes all of the functions in the Base
Edition of the suite. These VIs remain
once the evaluation period expires.

The Power Quality palette includes dozens of

measurements that conform to industry standards.

The File I/O palette includes file

format VIs, which includes the
COMTRADE file format VIs with

applications.
2. The LabVIEW Advantages for Power Measurements
Custom Solution

Using the NI LabVIEW Electrical Power Suite, you can combine the fixed standardized algorithms from the power industry with the
custom capability of a full programming language and modular hardware. This means that systems built with LabVIEW and NI
hardware have the flexibility to customize file formats, user interface (UI/HMI), web capability, communication protocols, and even
algorithms.
File Formats
COMTRADE
TDMS (open standard binary)
ASCII (human readable text)
CVS (ASCII file pre-formatted for common spreadsheet applications such as Excel)
Custom binary (user-defined)
Data Storage Options
Local disk (solid state optional)
Removable USB drive, SDMEM
FTP access (host or client)
OPC server
Enterprise database connectivity
Multiple Measurements

With NI CompactRIO (cRIO), you can select from over 50 measurement and control modules to suit the needs of very specific
applications. Augment a power measurement device built with LabVIEW and NI CompactRIO with any of the following
sensors/signals:
Sensors
Temperature (Thermocouple, RTD)
Load/Force/Torque/Pressure (Bridge)
Vibration and sound (IEPE/ICP)
Flow, rotation (tachometer, frequency, or pulse output)

10 V input/output (12-/16-/24-bit up to 1 MS/s/ch)
0 mA to 20 mA, 20 mA input/output (16-/24-bit up to 200 kS/s)
Digital and Relay
24 V DI, DO (8 and 32 channel modules)
60 V output (sourcing/sinking)
250 VAC relay (4 channel EM single-pole single-throw (SPST))
60 VDC relay (8 channel SS)
Access to Waveform Data

With over 30 years experience with measurements, National Instruments and LabVIEW help users with ultimate access to full
waveform data. Some form processing or algorithm is generally required to meet the power quality standards such as IEC
61000-4-30.

4. What Is LabVIEW?

NI LabVIEW is a graphical programming environment designed for measurements, analysis, and creating custom graphical user
interfaces (GUIs). Regardless of experience, engineers and scientists can rapidly and cost-effectively interface with measurement
and control hardware, analyze data, share results, and distribute systems. To obtain more information on LabVIEW or download
an evaluation, visit ni.com/labview.

5. National Instruments and Power Measurement

Power measurement involves several components, such as high-speed waveform measurement, synchronization, and analysis,
which are core competencies of National Instruments. NI hardware combined with LabVIEW software offers a customizable
solution for power metering and power-quality monitoring and analysis. To obtain more information on NI power measurement
resources or view case studies from NI customers measuring power, visit the Power Quality Monitoring home page.
