Royal Enfield is an Indian motorcycle company originally from Britain with factories in Chennai, India. It is one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers, established in 1893. Royal Enfield was acquired by the British Engineering Company and manufactured its first motorcycle in 1898. In the 1950s, Royal Enfield partnered with Madras Motors in India to assemble and later manufacture the 350cc Bullet motorcycle locally. By the 1960s, all components were made in India. Royal Enfield joined with Indian automotive company Eicher in the 1990s and has expanded globally, becoming one of the best-selling motorcycle brands worldwide by 2015.

History of Royal Enfield

Royal Enfield is an motorcycle company in India with factories in Chennai. It is Originally a


British motorcycle company - Royal Enfield and indigenous Madras Motors, now a subsidiary
of Eicher Motors Ltd. It manufactures the Royal Enfield Bullet, and other single-cylinder
motorcycles. It is established in 1893, and is one among the oldest motorcycle companies.
Royal Enfield is Considered as the World's oldest bikes still under production and use. At the
start a brand of the British Engineering Company, the Enfield Cycle Company which also
produced stationary engines, bicycles and rifle parts. The first vehicle of the brand 'Royal
Enfield' was manufactured in the year 1898 which was designed as a Quadriccycle. This monster
boasts of a strong military connection as being used in WW-I for carrying machine guns and
during the WW-II for transporting war instruments.
The Indian government searched for a right motorcycle for its police and army, for patrolling the
country's border. The Bullet of Royal Enfield was chosen as the most suitable bike for this job.
Indian government ordered 800 Bullets of 350 cc model. In 1955, the Redditch company
partnered with Madras Motors in Chennai, India to form 'Enfield India' to assemble
under licence, the 350 cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle in Chennai. The tooling was sold to
Enfield India so that they can manufacture components in India. During 1962, all components
were made in India. The Indian Enfield has 1960 engine, Royal Enfield still makes an essentially
similar bike in 350 cc and 500 cc variants, along with different models for different markets.
Royal Enfield was a once brand of the Enfield Cycle Company, it was a British manufacturing
firm. It then started in India for the Army 350 cc bikes were imported from the UK and
assembled in Madras. After few years, the company started manufacturing the 500 cc Bullet.
In the year of 1990, Royal Enfield joined with the Eicher Group, another automotive company in
India, and merged with it in 1994. Other than bikes, Eicher is involved in the manufacturing and
sales of commercial vehicles, tractors, and automotive gears. Even though Royal Enfield
experienced shortfalls in the 1990s, and stopped motorcycle production at their Jaipur facility in
2002, by 2013 the company managed to open a new primary factory in Oragadam, Chennai
suburb to the strength of increased demand for its motorcycles. The main factory at Tiruvottiyur,

Chennai became secondary then and continues to manufacture engines and few models of
motorcycle. RE announced its first takeover in May-2015 with the purchase of a UK based
motorcycle design and manufacturing firm, Harris Performance Products, which had previously
developed chassis of the RE Continental GT Cafe Racer.
RE right now sells motorcycles in more than 50 countries. RE surpassed Harley-Davidson in
global sales in 2015.
