Extrusion

Single-screw extrusion uses a rotating screw to push molten plastic through a die opening. There are two flow mechanisms: 1) Drag flow, where the rotating screw drags plastic down the barrel, producing a flow rate proportional to screw speed. 2) Pressure flow, where back pressure from the die produces a counter-flow proportional to the pressure difference from the die to the feed-end of the screw. The intersection of the extruder characteristic line and die characteristic line determines the operating point - the flow rate and pressure produced. Process parameters like screw speed, screw geometry, die size, and melt viscosity affect the operating point.

The tangential velocity at the barrel surface is determined

from the rotation speed of the screw:

(4.6)

The drag flow eectively pumps the polymer through the

extruder.
QD is proportional to the rotation speed N .
Proportionality constant only depends on screw geometry.

THE EXTRUDER CHARACTERISTIC
PRESSURE FLOW the Poiseuille flow suppressing
flow through the extruder
Extruders usually have some FLOW RESTRICTION (like a
die) at the end of the extruder. This creates a pressure gradient
along the screw that works against the flow through the screw:
QP =

W H 3 P
P
12 L

(4.7)

Again, the proportionality constant only depends on screw

geometry.
The NET VOLUMETRIC FLOW RATE is the sum:
(4.8)

Q = QD + QP

Example 1: OPEN DISCHARGE

No flow restriction at the end of the extruder (remove die)
QP = 0

and

Q = QD

Example 2: CLOSED DISCHARGE

No flow out of the extruder (plug die)
Q=0

and

QP = QD

P = N/

Single-Screw Extrusion
THE EXTRUDER CHARACTERISTIC
In general the die restricts the flow somewhat, but not
completely. Combining equations 4.6, 4.7, and 4.8, we get the
EXTRUDER CHARACTERISTIC:
Q = N

(4.13)

Figure 4: The Extruder Characteristic for a Newtonian Fluid is a

linear relation between Q and P .

Smaller Throughput (lower Q)

There is a simple relation between pressure drop and volumetric flow rate in the die.
