Students will compare/contrast and critique 3 sources on the same topic

Objective Summary
Third person point of view / First person point of View

Initial Instruction:
Teacher will give students three different versions of the same story (one to
two paragraphs each). For this Lesson, we will use three versions of a story
about a car accident with one story being from the Moms point of view, one
from the brother who witnessed it, and one from the little girl who was the
victim. Model how to take the three different versions of the same story and
objectively summarize into one.
Teacher will discuss and model how to write an objective summary using the
story of the car accident from three different points of view- including only the
facts and details, leaving out emotional responses- show the example using
the document camera asking students for input.

Instruction: Grouping decisions: TAPS= Total Group, Alone, Partner, Small groups
(random, heterogeneous, interest, needs-based)

Teacher will divide students into groups of four. (heterogeneously by ability)


Students will choose a writer and three Source Experts.
Each group of students will read and discuss a group of three articles on one of the
following topics: Arthur Miller, The Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism and The Second
Red Scare, and/or Puritanism.
Teacher will walk among various groups and monitor students and guide students
when needed.
Each Student Source Expert should highlight the key ideas and details of his/her
article.
Students within each group will work together to create one blended, objective
summary for the group. The fourth student in each group should be the designated
writer.
Students will present their objective summary to the class using the document camera
and projector.
