This document provides instructions for students applying for block housing for the 2016-2017 academic year. It explains that block housing allows groups of 2-8 students to apply for specific room configurations together. 2016-2017 Housing Blocking Application

General Information:
If a student applies for a 'block' housing option, they apply for a number of room configurations along
with a group of friends. Blocks range in size from 2 students to 8 students. All rising sophomores,
juniors, and seniors who are otherwise eligible for the Housing Lottery may apply for block housing.
We expect that approximately 450 students will select rooms during the Blocking Housing process.
Approximately 350 Seniors and Junior students will select rooms during the two live Spring Housing
Lotteries. Sophomores will preference their room choices via an electronic form, and will learn of their
room assignment during the Summer.
Students "WIN" their block applications once the average of the lottery numbers of the applicants is
determined. Not all students who apply for blocks will "win" their blocks. Many students who apply
will not be able to secure a room through block housing and should then pick a room during the regular
Housing Lottery or Housing Preference (rising sophomores).
Students do NOT find out their housing lottery numbers prior to submitting their block application.
The spirit behind this process is that we hope students choose to pick groups of rooms based on who
will be living around them, and not based on who has the 'best' number.
Blocks are non-transferrable and cannot be declined. If you apply for a block and 'win' that
block, you MUST live in that block for the Fall and Spring terms. "Breaking Block" will result
in a financial penalty, a lottery number penalty during the next lottery, and a move to the
bottom of the housing waitlist.
Do not apply for a block you do not want. Do not apply for a block you are ineligible for (check classyear rules for singles and building restrictions). Do not apply for a block that does meet your needs (if
you are eligible for special housing accommodations). Many blocks can support students with special
needs. Ask before applying if you have any room questions. If you apply for a block and win, you
may NOT change housing. BEFORE YOU APPLY, double-check the housing list for gender
restrictions and/or class year restrictions.
If you are going abroad in the Spring, you CAN apply for blocks but if you are not on-campus for the
Spring,
-if you are in a single, your room will be placed in the December lottery. You cannot decide
who gets a single in your block if you go abroad for the Spring
-if you are in a non-single, your blockmates can select your replacement. If remaining members
refuse to accept a new roommate, the entire block must enter the December housing lottery or a
random roommate will be assigned to the vacancy.
Students who do not apply for block housing or do not 'win' one of their blocks will automatically be
forwarded to the Spring Housing Lottery/Housing Preference.
.

Instructions for Blocking:

1. Only one application needs to be submitted for each group
2. Each group may apply for up to 10 blocks
3. Your name may only appear on one group application; the first student listed on the form is the
BLOCK COORDINATOR and will be the main student the Office of Student Engagement contacts
regarding any questions with the block
4. Your group must apply for your LARGEST block first, followed by smaller blocks
a. For example: a group of 8 friends may apply for an 8-person block, followed by a smaller 6person block, followed by 2 5-person blocks (as their 3rd and 4th choices). Each group can only
win 1 block.
b. You must 'fill' a block in order to apply. For example, you must have 6 people to apply for a 6person block; 3 people to fill a 3-person block, etc

5. Do not apply for a block you do not want!! If you apply and win, you cannot change your
housing
6. If you have housing accommodations, do not apply for a block that does not mean your needs
a. For example, if you are required to have non-carpet floors, do not apply for Willets
7. If you are applying to be a SAM, GA, DPA, or RA, be mindful that you cannot accept a block if
you accept a position. If someone within a block chooses one of these positions, it will forfeit the
entire block
8. Blocking applications are reviewed by the Office of Student Engagement and Housing Committee
to determine eligibility
9. The Office of Student Engagement reserves the right to change blocks or substitute rooms
numbers, after applications have been submitted for comparable rooms, if an error in
calculations occurs or the overall occupancy needs of the College change. Block averages
are calculated by hand by the OSE; mistakes happenif they do, well do our best to
resolve them fairly and consistently.
10. If you have questions about specific blocks, open offices hours will take place in the Office of
Student Engagement on the following dates/times:
Wednesday, April 4: 4-5pm
Friday, April 6: 2-3pm
Monday, April 11: 11-noon
11. Turn in completed blocking applications to the Office of Student Engagement during
business hours no later than Wednesday, April 13, 12:00pm (noon). NO LATE
APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED. NO EXCEPTIONS.
12. If your blocking application is not LEGIBLE and COMPLETE, IT WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED. This means EVERY BOX filled out and completed. Students frequently
leave off room numbers.
13. If you anticipate being an APPROVED early return student (e.g. Fall athlete, UPenn Classes,
etc), Mary Lyons, Palmer, Pittenger, Roberts, Danawell, Willets and Mertz may NOT be available to
accommodate early returns. Keep this in mind when applying for blocks.
