Venndiagram

This lesson plan teaches primary school students about Venn diagrams through a 35 minute lesson with 27 children. The students will learn what a Venn diagram is, how to place objects in one according to criteria, and develop an understanding of how Venn diagrams represent sorting in a pictorial form. The lesson involves introducing Venn diagrams, demonstrating how to place pictures of students in a large Venn diagram according to whether they are girls or aged 7, and having students practice sorting their own pictures. The teacher will assess the students' understanding by observing where they place themselves in a Venn diagram and what they say about their placement.

PGCE (Primary) Lesson plan

Subject: Mathematics and Numeracy

No. of
Class P3 Date 7/2/06 Time 11.00 Duration 35mins 27
children

Prior Learning
Children have previously learned the carroll diagram in a concrete manner where they had to
place themselves in the diagram.
Context :
Venn diagram
Learning outcomes
• Children will know what a venn diagram is
• Children will be able to place objects in a venn diagram according to certain criteria
• Children will begin to have an understanding of the concrete representation of the venn
diagram in pictorial form.

Lesson Introduction (2-3 mins approx.) Resources

Lesson phase 1
(Share lesson outcomes with children, introduce key learning point, link to previous learning, set lesson
expectations)
Yesterday boys and girls we learned about the carroll diagram. We use the
carroll diagram to sort ourselves. Today we are going to do some more sorting
but we are going to learn about sorting with another diagram – the venn
diagram. We are going to learn what a venn diagram is and what it looks like
and we are going to use one to sort some things.
Lesson phase 2 (10mins approx.)
(Part of lesson where teacher teaches, new material is outlined, demonstrated and explained)
Children gathered around the large venn diagram in the PE hall.

What was the diagram we used yesterday?

Carroll diagram.
What did we use it for? To sort ourselves. Mats and
What criteria did we sort for yesterday? Girl, not girl, aged 7 and not aged 7. hoops.

Yesterday we used the mats to hold the different sets that we sorted for. We are
using the mats again today only they are not for four different sets. The mats Pictures for
are part of our venn diagram. I want you to think of them as one big rectangle children.
and not different mats. Can you do that for me?

Girl Aged 7

What do you see in our venn diagram?

Two hoops.
What label is in the red hoop? Girl.
PGCE (Primary) Lesson plan
What do you think would go in the red hoop then? Girls.
What label is in the green hoop? Aged 7.
What do you think would go in the green hoop then? People who are aged 7.

Would we all fit in this venn diagram? I don’t think we would so I made wee
pictures for everyone to place in the diagram instead.

(select a child who fits into only one set in the diagram)
Johnny here is your picture. Do you fit into any of these sets? Johnny places
his picture in the diagram.
Why do you go in that set and not the other one? Not a girl but I am seven.

(Select a child who will fit into the other set in the diagram)
Eilis, would you fit into any of these sets? Eilis places her picture in the
diagram. Why are you in that set Eilis? I am a girl. Why are you not in the
other set? I am not seven.

(Select a child who will not fit into either set in the diagram)
Paul, would you fit into any of these sets? No. Not a girl but not seven.
You know what we’ll do with you then, because you are not a girl and you are
not seven we’ll just put you out in this big rectangle around the hoops because it
is part of our diagram too.

(Select a child who will fit into both sets in the diagram)
Eimear, would you fit into any of these sets? Fit into both sets.
Oh dear what will we do?
I’ve an idea.

Teacher demonstrates while explaining to class.

If we pull these two sets together and overlap them then what do we have?
There is part of the red circle so we can have girls in it and there is part of the
green circle so we can have aged 7 children in it.
This will suit you Eimear then because you are a girl who is seven.

Because there is some red hoop we can only have girls and because there is
some green hoop they must be aged 7.

I wonder if all of you could place your pictures in the correct place!

Lesson Development (15-20mins approx) Resources
Lesson phase 3
(The key section of the lesson. Children are given the opportunity to make personal sense of the material they
have encountered, information becomes learning. Time needs to be spent on activities and tasks that enable the
learners to manipulate and interrogate information in order to make sense of it.)
Pictures for
Children each in turn get to place their picture in the appropriate set and tell why children
they are putting it in that set.

Focus of teacher interactions during learning phase

(Plan and describe what the teacher will do or who the teacher will work with once all the children have settled to complete their
tasks)
As this is a whole class activity the teacher will observe all children placing their picture and will
assist if some children are still unsure as to where the picture should go.

Lesson Conclusion (5-10mins approx.) Resources

Lesson phase 4
(Review, reflect and summarise lesson, ensure children know what they know, cement learning and
understanding and ensure that it is remembered)
Teacher has an A3 size venn diagram drawn on paper. Children in turn get to A3 size venn
come and write their name on the venn diagram in the correct place. diagram.
Pencil.
Assessment (What will you assess and how will you assess it?)
What? Children know what a venn diagram is and that they can use one to sort for two criteria.
Children will be able to see the concrete venn diagram in pictorial form.
How? Observing the children throughout the lesson. Observing where they place themselves
in the diagram and what they say about why they are in that set.
