A Personal Reflection

1) The document discusses various management theories that have been developed over time to help managers increase efficiency, such as Scientific Management, the Human Relations Approach, and Quantitative Approaches. 2) The author believes that Fredrick Taylor's idea of cooperation between workers and managers is important, but disagrees that money is the sole motivator of workers. The author also agrees with Henri Fayol's 14 principles of management. 3) While the author would implement a clear hierarchy and some quantitative data, they would not rely solely on impersonal rules or numerical simulations. Contingency planning and decision theory are emphasized as tools the author would utilize.

A Personal Reflection on Management Theories

Richard D. Daimary
PGDM B 2016

Management is the process of designing and maintaining an environment in which

individuals, working together in groups, efficiently accomplish selected aims. A manager
carries out the managerial functions of planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling.
All organizations have managers or some form of management. The main aim of all
managers is to create profit and also increase productivity which implies effectiveness and
efficiency. Managers have the responsibility taking action that will enable individuals to
make their best contribution to group objectives.
Over the years there have been many different methods that have come up to help managers
be more efficient such as Scientific Management, Human Relations Approach, Quantitative
Approach etc. Many of todays top managers use such methods that were developed to
further increase the output of their various organisations. I as a manager too would use
various of the methods that were made to enhance the work environment of my organisation.
Fredrick W. Taylor was the man who started the Scientific Management movement. He and
his associates studied how work was performed and also looked at how this affected workers
productivity. Taylor proposed that workers and managers need to cooperate with one another
which I believe is a very important factor in todays management approach and I would
implement it highly in my line of managerial work. I, however do not agree with his
philosophy that all workers are motivated by money because if that were the case then simply
the more the money the more the productivity should be but sadly that is not the case. Henri
Fayol is considered the real father of Modern Management theory and from his 14
principles of management I would implement all his 14 rules as they make a lot of logical
sense. Division of work is of course a very important approach in the modern day as there are
many positions in the industry where employees have specialized positions and status and
this does increase efficiency. His other principles on authority, discipline, unity of command,
unity of direction, subordination of individual interests to the general interest is a principle I
would follow strictly, remuneration to increase employee satisfaction, centralization of
decision making processes, scalar chain which I believe makes work more efficient because
of a set chain of command, order, equity, stability of tenure of personnel, initiative and Espirit
de Corps are all principles I would implement in my managerial role.

Bureaucracy is a system of management distinguished by its clear hierarchy and a rigid

division of labour. It has inflexible rules, regulations and procedure and also impersonal
relationships. I do not believe in this kind of system of management although I would adapt
the clear system of hierarchy as a defined chain of command will lead to more productivity.
The Human Relations theory is something I believe every modern organisation implements
highly these days even though machines seem to be replacing most workers there is still a
human element needed to operate them. This theory has the belief that people desire to be
part of a supportive team that facilitates development and growth and if employees receive
good care and encouragement their motivation increases so they become more productive.
This theory I highly believe in as simply put happy employees equals more profit. The
Quantitative Method of Management involves the use of statistics, information models and
computer simulations. In todays modern world technology and science have reached a very
high level so simulations on computers and statistics etc are all helpful indicators of
improving worker efficiency but I would not highly use them I would consider them but on
the whole I would not blindly trust just numerical data from a screen. System Approach of
Management is based on the generalization that everything is interrelated and independent.
It has a hierarchy of sub-systems. This form of management is something I probably would
probably not implement as it is not too clear to me as on how itll be useful in my managerial
role. Contingency Plan is a part of management that I believe should be highly implemented
in every organisation and every manager should have one. Contingency plans are back up
plans in case of a disaster small or large scale. it helps to address all business-critical
operations, helps to identify risks and not just large scale types but ones that are small scale
as well such as loss of data, customers, suppliers etc. a contingency plan or plans are a must
have in any and every organisation and as a manager I would keep a plan A, B, C, D and E to
deal with any form of loss as I believe one should can never be too careful. Decision Theory
in management is the use of logical and mathematical concepts aimed at helping us as
managers in formulating rules that may prove to be a very advantageous course of action. As
a highly logical thinker this theory of management would help me to make decisions based
on availability of information which in todays world is just a click away.
It is not easy in the managerial world and although I am but a student I believe all these
theories that have come up and are being implemented in organisations one way or the other
will help me to become the type of manager who not only does his job efficiently but helps
others as well.
