The National Educational Testing Bureau conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureships and junior research fellowships in order to ensure minimum standards for teaching professionals and researchers in India. The test is administered in various subjects including humanities, social sciences, computer science, and physical sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research also administers the NET for science subjects jointly with the University Grants Commission. Candidates who qualify for the junior research fellowship are eligible for the fellowship for five years subject to certain conditions. Junior research fellows are selected from among NET-qualifying candidates who opt for the fellowship in their application. he National Educational Testing Bureau of UGC conducts NET to determine eligibility for lectureship and

for award of Junior Research Fellowship for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the
entrants in the teaching profession and research. The Test is conducted in Humanities (including
languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and
Applications and Electronic Science.
The CSIR conducts the UGC-CSIR NET for other Science subjects, namely, Life Sciences, Physical
Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary Sciences
jointly with the University Grants Commission. The tests are conducted twice in a year generally in the
months of June and December. For candidates who desire to pursue research, the Junior Research
Fellowship is available for five years subject to fulfillment of certain conditions. University Grants
Commission has allocated a number of fellowships to the universities for the candidates who qualify the
test for Junior Research Fellowship. The JRFs are awarded to the meritorious candidates from among the
candidates qualifiying for eligibility for lectureship in the National Eligibility Test. JRFs are available only
to the candidates who opt for it in their application forms.
The NET in Major Science Subjects, viz., Chemical Sciences; Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary
Sciences; Life Sciences; Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences is conducted jointly with the
Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. The concerned notifications are issued
separately by CSIR.
Note :
On behalf of University Grants Commission, the CBSE announces holding of the NET on 10 th July, 2016
(SUNDAY) for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor
only or JRF & Eligibility for Assistant Professor Both in Indian universities and colleges. Council of
Scientific and Industrial Research will conduct NET in 83 subjects at 89 selected National Eligibility Test
Examination Cities spread across the country.
The candidates who qualify for the award of JRF are eligible to pursue research in the subject of their postgraduation or in a related subject and are also eligible for Assistant Professor. The universities, institutions,
IITs and other national organizations may select the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) awardees for whole
time research work in accordance with the procedure prescribed by them. The award of Junior Research
Fellowship (JRF) and Eligibility for Assistant Professor both OR Eligibility for Assistant Professor only
will depend on the performance of the candidate in all three papers of National Eligibility Test
(NET). However, the candidates qualifying exclusively for Assistant Professor will not be considered for
award of (Junior Research Fellowship) JRF.
