Vane Shear Test

This document describes the vane shear test procedure to measure the shear strength of cohesive soils. The vane shear test is a quicker and cheaper alternative to other shear strength tests for soft soils less than 0.3 kg/cm2. It involves inserting a vane into an undisturbed soil specimen and measuring the torque required to fail the soil as the vane is rotated. The test provides the undrained shear strength of the soil, which can be used along with a remolded strength test to evaluate soil sensitivity.
