Handball Lesson Plan1

Students will practice and refine fundamental movement skills like running, hopping, and jumping by playing a warm up game called "rock the zoo" where they must move to different sections of the court based on animal names and sounds. The main activity will focus on developing handball skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting through various drills and obstacle courses. Students will practice dribbling techniques individually and in pairs, work on passing accuracy in groups, and participate in a three track course involving dribbling, passing, and shooting. The lesson will conclude with a modified handball game where students are divided into two teams and must pass the ball down the court to score by having a player catch it in

SPECIFIC LEARNING
OUTCOMES
(Students will )
Students will:
- Practise and
refine a variety of
fundamental
movement skills,
including running,
hopping, jumping,
skipping.
- Use creative and
critical thinking
strategies to
mimic behaviours
and movements
of well-known
animals, without
using equipment.

ACTIVITY
(shape + method + enhance)
Warm up rock the zoo
Students will begin in the centre of the
court where a short explanation of the
rules will happen. The aim of the activity
is to get students moving around and
using memory and critical thinking to
move to the correct section of the court.
The sections will be named lion,
kangaroo and snake. When the students
hear or see the sound or action of the
animal, they must run to that section of
the court. Additional movements will be
added, for example if they hear kangaroo
called out they must hop like a kangaroo.

Develop
ment

Students will:
- Develop and
demonstrate
dribbling and
movement of the
ball using correct
handball
technique.
- Develop and
demonstrate an
understanding of
the correct
technique of
shooting a
handball.

Main Activity
Students will go through a variety of
activities and skills that are needed when
learning Handball.
Firstly, we will speak about the different
types of throwing the ball we learn last
week.

Dribbling
Students will be working individually or in
pairs (depending on the amount of balls
available).
Students will practice a variety of
dribbling techniques; explaining to them
how to dribble the ball first. Students
need to remember that the hand and
wrist need to be soft, not hitting the ball
with their palm.
Students will:

netball court
Both base lines and the
centre ring will be used
as animals
Ensure sidelines are
not used as could
interfere with other
groups activities
When giving

students so they are

distractions, e.g. other
groups, bags, etc., and
not facing the sun

get ready for their
partner.
Students will need to
be spread out to avoid
collisions; especially
when running
backwards or
sideways.
Use the centre circle to
group students
together
Ensure lines that will
be used are clearly
visible for teacher and
students

Dribble the ball around their body,

go around before the ball rolls

- Dribble the ball around their body
whilst sitting down.
- Dribble the ball whilst jumping up
and down.
- Dribble running forward,
backward or sideways.
Students will then use one third of the
netball court to run in, they will have to
dribble the ball, all while trying to steal
another students ball.
Shooting:
Students will be placed into groups of 4
(one group of 3). Each group will have a
hoop and a ball. Students will have to
take it in turns to throw the ball and try
and land it in the hoop (on the first
bounce). There will be a cone with a
tennis ball in the middle of the hoop to
help students see what they are aiming
at.
Shooting activity
Students will be in their groups and will
participate in a three track obstacle
course.
Track 1: Students will dribble through
hoops and then a pass off before
shooting for a goal (helper will be
standing there to catch the ball).
Track 2: Students will dribble the ball
along the line and then zig-zag around
the cones before shooting the ball to
the person in the hoop at the end.
Track 3: Students will continue to throw
the ball from various distances to shoot
the ball to their partner in the hoop.

Closure

Students will:
- Practise accuracy,
and throwing and
catching by
incorporating
effort, space,
time, objects and
people when
performing
movements.
- Communicate
effectively and
responsibly with
their team mates,
showing respect
and inclusive
practices at all
times.

Closure Modified Handball game

Students will be placed into two teams
and will play a modified game of
Handball. Students will use the netball
court and a mini basketball to pass the
ball down the court. To score a goal
students will have to pass the ball
correctly (from the methods learnt in the
class) and then a player will have to be
standing in the hoop to catch the ball.
