Entry 2: Technology to Enhance Instruction

Integrating Instructional Technology
Integrating technology in the classroom is like having the world at your fingertips.
Whatever students visualize can be internalized. There is a myriad of instructional technological
videos and resources that are available at the disposal of teachers in the classroom.
Understanding technology and how valuable a tool it is, is the first step. Technology is engaging
and enhances the development of students (Linder, 2012). It keeps students informed with up-todate information on relevant subjects and topics. Providing students with critical thinking skills
and knowledge creates successful candidates for the future. Teachers that utilize technology in
the classroom gives students the tools they will need to motivate them, to think responsibility and
to interact on a greater scale for successful futures.
Interactive Whiteboards
Interactive Whiteboards are boards that allow the teacher to interact with students. By using a
laptop and projector, the teacher can use and display information and instructions on the board
which acts like a computer screen that is viewable by the entire class (Linder, 2012). It allows the
students to interact using whiteboard markers and pens. The teacher is able to create engaging
and motivating lessons for the classroom. The whiteboard can take students on virtual field trips
around the world all at the touch of a pen with embedded videos and mapping software. Students

can create multimedia presentations for collaboration with other students. Research has shown
that interactive whiteboards are a staple to the learning environment.
Khan Academy
Khan Academy is a supplemental interactive tool designed to help teachers with
empowering students inside and outside the classroom. They have resources on every subject and
topic that students may need help with. The tool can identify where your strengths and
weaknesses lie to support those areas. Using Khan Academy as a technology tool teachers can
build lesson plans that are unique to the students and classroom which allows students to learn at
their own level and pace (Beach, 2012). It is a tool not only used by teachers but students and
parents all around the world and in 36 different languages. In the coach dashboard, teachers
know students performance and the class as a whole according to their detailed profiles that are
included. It can be accessed from anywhere in the world which makes it convenience as well as
tool useful.
Schoology
Schoology is an educational platform designed with instructional and high level
assessments for learning. Teachers can create and distribute standards from any location to use
in their classroom. Accessing information is easy as teachers can use any technology device
available. Student gain real-time insights catered from personalized instruction. Schoology
allows teachers to connect everyone using one network. Students are more engaged which helps
them to learn information faster. With Schoology teachers and students work as a team and they
can continue discussions beyond the classroom. In the classroom, students can interact by joining
others within the school. Using Schoology, teachers can easily integrate apps, tools and any

standards that are used within the classroom problem free. It is multifunctional and
multidimensional.
Pros and Cons of using Technology to Facilitate Learning
Using technology in the classroom to facilitate learning is immeasurable. Teachers are
able to build, utilize and custom assignments to meet the needs of every student in the classroom.
Resources designed to enhance the learning experience making it fun, engaging and effective.
Information can be shared beyond the classroom and abroad with most technological tools and
devices as long as there is available wifi and internet services. Through collaboratively sharing
knowledge, students also recognize the value and important of different perspectives (Beach,
2012). Technology is increasing and every student benefits from some form of connectivity.
Whether it is learning, gaming or informational; technology is needed in the classroom and at
home for supplementation where extra help is evident.
Technology as we know it is shifting from recall and repeat to find and evaluate. The
generation of educators today must teach critical thinking skills, problem solving and interaction
through media and technology to compete within the new age.
Although everything is technology centered, there are risks associated like division. What
happens with the individual that has no device he/she can use at home or school? Is everyone
supplemented? There are even greater risks with cheating on assignments because students have
available and easy access to the internet. Children are easily distracted with the internet and may
be tempted to visit other sites while in the classroom. Provide in-text citations and references of
research to support your statements.)Detail the pros and cons of using technology to facilitate
learning. Describe how technology will impact your classroom. Must be written in paragraph
format, bullet points are not allowed.

Wired and Wireless Classrooms

Technology has come a long way in the classroom. We have wireless technology in the
classroom which has its advantages. Wireless networks use wireless technologies like radio
waves which connects computers and other devices in the home and school. (GCU, 2016).
Tablets, smartphones and many wireless devices receive such signals that connect to the internet
in the classroom. You have the ability to access information that is portable from home to
classroom use. Teachers have the ability to make changes, update and interact with students
effortlessly. In wireless classrooms, while internet connection is supplied, it can often be limited
because in a wireless environment, connection is shared among users which reduces the speed. In
a wired classroom environment however, there is greater speed in the connection of the internet
as well as a larger capacity of users because wired classrooms have individualized set ups to
bandwidth.
Although wired classrooms have reliable service, they use cables wires for set up that are
confined to one area. On the flip side, students use of multimedia tools with files over 15MB
are supported in classrooms that are wired. Unlike wireless, multimedia tools over 15MB are not
able to be supported thereby decreasing efficiency in the classroom. Wired classrooms cannot
transport devices. Computers are bound to one location. Information is limited unless
information is saved to a USB and transported which does not yield productivity among students.
Conclusion
Using Interactive technology in the classroom and home is important for the growth and
development of students. Technology is engaging, motivating and informative. Teachers have the
ability to cater to the needs of every student using technology based lessons. Students are able to
think responsibly and interact with others to help build their minds for their future.
