From the results obtained from Workbench analysis, it is shown that hex dominant has the higher
element quality and lower average skewness as compared to the tetrahedron meshing method
with a fixed element size of 0.003 m. Element quality and skewness is however related to each
other. This is because as the skewness of the element increases, the element quality will be lower.
Average value is taken because the element of mesh is not as similar to the selected model at
some region. For example, at the hole in the model, the skewness at a particular point will be
higher due to the effort of trying to fit to the shape. The element quality could be increase by
using smaller element size as proven in screenshot in figure 5. It shows that by using 0.001 m
element size, it will give much better element equality and skewness as this provides the analysis
with more nodes and elements which in turns give a better finite element analysis. However, this
will cost more time to analyze the model because it will be more complicated and more thorough
compare to larger element sizes. Skewness in this case is reduced due to the smaller element size
because more element can be easily arranged to fit the region which requires skew, thus reduces
the skewness of the element.
By studying the trend of the graphs, the element quality shifted to the right side when element
size is reduced from 0.003 m to 0.001 m. Note that the right side of the x-axis of the graph
represent to the unity of element quality (which is 1) and the higher the number of element
quality is the better. Other than that, element quality can be improved by using smaller element
size for the surface of the hole in the z-bracket as this will reduce the skewness of element at
that particular region.
