Application Brief Oil & Gas

SkyWAN for Oil & Gas

Total Oil with DeTeSat
End Users Business
TOTAL OIL is the worlds fifth and Europes third largest oil company. With operations in more than
100 countries, TOTAL OIL is a world-class oil and gas company, a front-ranking petrochemicals
producer and a major supplier of speciality chemicals, particularly engineered rubber products and
coatings. With commitment to oil and gas exploration and production through reserve placement
rates and research TOTAL OIL ranks among the world's most efficient and competitive oil
companies.

End Users Needs

For exploration of oil and gas the TOTAL OIL is operating more than 100 oil platform all over the
world. Since those oil platforms are located far away from civilisation: they sit somewhat in the
middle of nowhere for example, in the ocean, in a desert or any other hardly accessible environments,
terrestrial infrastructure for communication purposes is not available in such areas. However
communication is essential to operate those platforms and to successfully carry out TOTAL OIL s
business. A satellite network is the ideal solution under these circumstances.
TOTAL OIL activities for oil and gas exploration and production is structured according the
following regions:
Africa
Asia
Middle East
South America
Each region requires a separate satellite network to achieve a complete global coverage. Those
networks shall be interconnected in Europe offering the capabilities to co-ordinate the world-wide
exploration and production of it`s overall oil and gas resources. The network shall deliver and gather
information such as geological data, chemical analysis the actual amount of production etc. between
those exploration and production sites, their regional headquarters and the central headquarter located
in Paris. Financial data need to exchange as well. For that purpose a SAP client server model is used.
Another client server model is used to exchange data about the actual production of the various sites.
The network must be highly flexible to support File Transfers with high bandwidth usage for a small
amount of time. Since the remote locations within a region need to talk to each other a meshed
topology is required supporting single hob connections. In addition it must be possible from these
sites to have access to the public telephone network for daily business.
In detail the following network requirements have to be met:
Deployable in areas with poor terrestrial infrastructure
High transmission capabilities (up to 512 kbit/s)
Meshed topology for any to any communication
Dynamic bandwidth allocation
Optimum bandwidth usage
High flexibility
Supporting voice and data simultaneously

Application Brief Oil & Gas

Each site needs to support at least up to 2 voice channels and up to 512 kbit/s for data applications.

ND SatCom Solution
Based on its premium SkyWAN system ND SatCom provides a very cost effective satellite network
solution. Through the fully dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme, space segment capacity is
automatically assigned to a station requiring transmission capacity. Making use of statistical
multiplexing allows the available bandwidth to be squeezed as much as possible. Thus SkyWAN
offers much higher flexibility but requires much lower bandwidth capacities compared to SCPC
solutions. By classifying different quality of service categories, voice, video and non real time data
are transmitted simultaneously providing a unified platform for all kind of services. In addition the
following features are supported:

Meshed topology allowing any to any communication

Bandwidth on demand allowing optimal bandwidth usage
Support of data applications e.g. TCP/IP, X.25 via Ethernet
Ensures high quality for voice by reservation of dedicated bandwidth and single hop
connection
Inter-working with terrestrial network
Scalability of network for future growth up to 8 x 2 Mbit/s

As indicated above a separate network is set-up for each region see figure 1:

For Africa with PAS 4 in C-Band

For Asia with APSTAR-IIR in C-Band
For Middle East with Eutelsat W3 in Ku-Band
For South America with Intelsat 805 in C-Band

These satellite networks are interconnected via a terrestrial network which links Berlin, Hameln, Paris
and Berlin see figure 3. For this terrestrial network a back-up network is set-up connecting those
central sites plus Aberdeen with each other. The link to Aberdeen connect this link to DMS (Data
Marine Systems Inc.) an European offshore communication service provider, The back-up satellite
network provides a network capacity of total 512 kbit/s in Ku-Band. The actual size of the back-up
network is 5 sites.

DeTeSat
As service provider DeTeSat has set up the complete network and is responsible for the operation
including the fibre network between Berlin, Hameln and Paris. ND SatCom was chosen for this
project because of its advanced technical solution providing meshed topology for any to any
communication and fulfilling the end users requirements to support voice, data and video
simultaneously with high quality across a unified platform. Due to the success of this project it is
intended to upgrade this network up to about 100 sites within this year.
