Brief overview of Course


Use of powerful general purpose softwares such as Matlab, Hysys, Excel and Mapel for
various applications and many other software tools such as PRO II, MathCad, SPSS, etc.

At the end of this course the student is expected to
Appreciate the speed, savings in time and effort in use of computers
Improve subject understanding through use of computers
Able to apply softwares in the simulation and design of process plants

WEEK 1:

in equations of state and in vapourliquid equilibrium, in chemical reaction


equilibrium and in mass balances with recycle streams.

WEEK 2:

in simulation of mass transfer equipment and in Process Simulation, chemical


reactors and in transport processes in one dimension, in chemical reactors and
in transport processes in one dimension.

WEEK 3:

in Fluid Flow in Two and Three Dimensions and Convective Diffusion Equation
in Two and Three Dimensions, Mathematical functions, curve fitting & regression
and solving equations.

WEEK 4:

Numerical integration & differentiation, solving ordinary differential equations


solving partial differential equations.

WEEK5:

Hysys: getting started, thermodynamics, flowsheeting;

WEEK 6:

Reactions, simulating unit operations and simulation of chemical


processes.

WEEK 7:

MATLAB Interact, Encoding Matrices, Description of the MATLAB


Workspace, Variables Used for Complex Numbers, Operations on
Matrices.

WEEK 8:

MID-SEMESTER EXAMS

WEEK 9:

Graphing in MATLAB, Additional Notes on Matrices, Loop and


Decision in MATLAB, MATLAB m-files.

WEEK 10: The MATLAB Diary, MATLAB Toolboxes, Rundown of FrequentlyUsed MATLAB Commands.
WEEK 11: Use MATLAB to: solve problems in chemical engineering;
WEEK12: Simulate chemical processes; Prepare reports based on MATLAB
WEEK13: Use of MAPEL for chemical engineering calculations
