Truerollingoccursonlywhen<thedirectionofmotionofthevehicleisperpendiculartothewheelaxis(Fig.
27.22A),i.e.thewheelissubjectedtoforwardforce.Whenwheelissubjectedtosideforcethatactsparallelto
thewheelaxis,atruescrubactionisproduced(Fig.27.24B).Whenthewheelissubjectedtobothforwardand
sideforces,themovementiscompoundedoftruerollingandlateraldistortion(Fig.27.22C).Thiscondition
occurswhenthewheelsarebeingsteered,i.e.thedirectionofmotionisneitherparallelnorperpendiculartothe
axisofrotation.
Onacircularpath,truerollingconditionoccurswhentheprojectedaxesofseveralwheelsallmovingin
differentcurvedpathsintersectatasinglepointcalledtheinstantaneouscentre
(Fig.27.22D).Whentheseprojectedaxesdonotintersectatasinglepoint,adegreeoftyrescrubresults(Fig.
27.22E).

Thisequationgivesthefundamentalconditiontobesatisfiedbyalltypesofsteeringmechanismiftruerolling
forallthewheelsistobeobtainedavoidinganylateralslip.Thesteeringlinkageusedinthevehiclesmust
maintaintheproperangleswiththewheelswhentakingaturn.Butpracticallyitisnotpossibletomaintain
absolutelycorrectanglesforthewheelsforallturningangles.

AutomotiveEngineers(SAE)adoptedthefollowingdefinition.Theturningradiusofanautomotivevehicleis
theradiusofthearcdescribedbythecentreofthetrackmadebytheoutsidefrontwheelofthevehiclewhen
makingitsshortestturn.Theturningradiusdependsupona,b,candthemaximumangle0throughwhichthe
insidefrontwheelcanbedeflectedfromthestraightaheadposition.ThusR0fwhenexpressedinthese
