5.08 Discussion Group Collaboration
5.08 Discussion Group Collaboration
1. Please choose one electrolyte to research. Please research your electrolyte write at least
one thorough paragraph for each question. (20 pts total)
My electrolyte is: Sodium Chloride
What is the role of your electrolyte in the human body? (6 pts)
Sodium maintains the fluid balance and helps relax your muscles.
How does your electrolyte work in the functioning of nerves and muscles? (6 pts)
When sodium shifts across cell membranes, they trigger muscle contractions and nerve cell
transmission.
Describe, in great detail, at least three specific health problems that can arise from an
imbalance of electrolytes in the body. (6 pts)
Muscle spasm, weakness and twitching are three health problems that can arise from an
imbalance of electrolytes in the body.

2. Post your research for #1 in this Discussion Group of the class. (5 pts)

3. Group work. Read and reply to two other students posts. (14 pts total)
Find two students who chose different electrolytes from you. REPLY to each of the students,
commenting on an interesting fact you learned from their post. Paste the other students (your
group) below:

My electrolyte is: Hydrochloric Acid (HCL)
Within the human bodys stomach is gastric (hydrochloric) acid. This is the bodys primary
digestant and disinfectant (Morgan). It is made by stomach and breaks down the proteins within
the food you eat; the more your body makes, the more your stomach can efficiently digest.
However, low levels of HCL are usually the primary indicators of digestive issues.

The proteins digested by your stomach (the food you eat) into small soluble molecules, that then
go into the small intestine where those minerals not able to be digested by the stomach are
further broken down and then distributed to the remainder of the body, including the nerves and
muscles that need them.
Describe, in great detail, at least three specific health problems that can arise from an
imbalance of electrolytes in the body. (6 pts)
Within a healthy digestive system, the proper amount of HCL within the stomach kills ingested
(with food), malign, bacteria. But if that concentration is too low, hypochlorhydria will develop.
And with low stomach acid, many problems can arise:
- the food we need cannot be digested and that is a serious issue
- the body fails to sterilize the stomachs contents
- a fermenting gut could result in a fermenting brain
- an increased risk of stomach cancer

When there is too much stomach acid:
Gastritis: the irritation, inflammation, or even complete erosion of the stomach lining. It can be
both acute chronic
Peptic ulcer: a sore that develops within your duodenum (the first part of your small intestine).
Acid reflux: a condition in which HCL goes from the stomach back into the esophagus which can
irritate or dissolve the tissue

time. A person with lactose intolerance may have trouble getting all of the calcium they
need because their body may not respond well to dairy products such as milk eggs and
cheese. To help with that a doctor may provide you with calcium supplements that will allow
you to get your daily dosage of calcium. Even though calcium is good for you, too much
calcium is not and may lead to kidney stones which are a result of consuming lots of
unnecessary calcium.

I was not aware that calcium helps with muscles, I thought they were only to help bones
and teeth grow but since I read this, I now know that calcium is also involved with
muscles.

7. Reflect. Please answer the following questions, in at least one paragraph. (10 pts)
What did you enjoy most about this assignment? Do you feel others will be happy with what
you posted in the Discussion Groups? Why/why not? What will you do differently, if anything in
your next online collaboration opportunity?
I enjoyed not having to wait on other students. I would much rather work alone anyway. I think
students would be happy with my work I posted because I provided enough information so that
people reading this will be able to gather information from it.
