Domain A Reflection

Heather Coates reflects on the three artifacts included in her Domain A portfolio. The first is a lesson plan from student teaching showing her ability to teach math successfully despite it being a challenging subject. The second is an observation from her university supervisor evidencing her teaching skills across all domains. The third is a literature review on differentiating math instruction to make lessons more interactive and engaging, especially important as she continues developing confidence in teaching math.

Abstract
In this paper I will reflect on my choices of the artifacts included under Domain A in my
e-portfolio. Including specific artifacts allows me to display my strengths along with some of my
weaknesses as an educator.

Artifact 1
The first artifact I included is a lesson plan I created when I was student teaching in a
third grade class. Math is one of the hardest subjects for me to teach, however as a multiple
subject teacher I am required to do so. I am definitely capable of teaching math however it has
always brought a slight amount of anxiety. My first master teachers favorite subject to teach
wasmath! I could not have imagined being set up with a better master teacher for than Holly
Hibbert. As an expert math teacher she always encouraged me to teach math. When I was student
teaching we switched classes and the higher students from our class and two other classes, came
to our class. I chose to include this lesson plan as it showed to me I am more than capable of
teaching math successfully.
This lesson was a scary one for me to teach, my master teacher had a wonderful lesson
idea that I just couldnt understand. After discussing with my master teacher I got a burst of
excitement and energy as I finally understood how to teach the lesson of creating equations. This
lesson was very interactive and engaging for the students. Through my master teacher I have
found that the best differentiation for higher achieving students is engaging them in interactive
lessons. This lesson may not have been a complete success but it allowed me to reflect on my
abilities as a teacher and areas in which I have the opportunity to grow even more.
Artifact 2
The second artifact I included for Domain A was an observation of my overall student
teaching performance done by University Support Provider. This artifact displays my teaching
ability as it pertains to TPE 1B: Subject-specific pedagogical skills for multiple teaching
assignments. This artifact reflects and includes evidence of meeting each domain for the

California Teaching Performance Expectations. I decided to include this artifact as I am able to

reflect back on the comments my University Support Provider included and set goals for my
career. Although I showed success in each domain I am still able to reflect on my overall
performance and make adjustments allowing me to grow as a teacher.
Artifact 3
For my final artifact for Domain A, I decided to write a literature review on
differentiating math. As I explained in my rationale for artifact 1, math has been a harder subject
for me to feel confident in teaching. Although my districts textbook aligns perfectly with the
California Common Core State Standards, and includes differentiation, I dont always find the
lessons to be interactive or engaging. I chose to write a literature review on an article discussing
Learning Mathematics through Representations (LMR) because teachers are able to incorporate
it and encourage student participation. I chose this artifact as it will be a reminder as I reflect on
my career on the future of my goal to be a more successful teacher when teaching math and try
and make the lesson more interactive and engaging for my students.
