On completion of this unit the student should be able to examine the practice of at least two artists, with
reference to two artworks by each artist, referencing the different historical and cultural context of each artwork.
Time to complete the task: 10 weeks

Assessment Task 1- Total grade for Unit 3 -SAC 5%


Main Inquiry Question: How have the artists interpreted subject matter, influences, cultural and historical
contexts and the communication of ideas and meanings?
Sub-questions:

How have the artists used materials, techniques and processes?


How have the artists used art elements and art principles to demonstrate aesthetic qualities?

How has the historical/contemporary context influenced the artists work?

Learning Objectives: The students will be able to:

Analyse ways in which artworks reflect artists interpretations of subject matter, influences, cultural and
historical contexts and the communication of ideas and meanings.

Analyse and discuss ways in which artists use materials, techniques and processes.

Analyse the ways in which artists use art elements and art principles to demonstrate aesthetic qualities.

Research and discuss art practices in relation to particular recognised historical and contemporary
artworks.


Instructions:
Research and analyse the work of two artists, who were part of the Human/Animal/Artist Exhibition
at the Mc Clelland Gallery.
The artworks may have been made in the same historical period, however they need to have been created in
different culture contexts. (For example: You may choose a Non-Indigenous Australian and an Indigenous
Australian or artists from two different countries.)

Choose two artists from the list below:


Lauren Berkowitz, Catherine Chalmers (USA), Catherine Clover, Joe Japanangka James, Nicholas Mangan, Vera
Mller, Samuel Namunjdja, Sean Peoples, Elizabeth Presa, David Rothenberg (USA), Sandra Selig, Tai Snaith, Jason
deCaires Taylor (UK), Esme Timbery, Greg Mosquito Tjampitjin, Louise Weaver, Shona Wilson, Watarru
Collaborative, John Wolseley.

Students are required to compare the two artists and study two artworks by each artist. (4 artworks in total)
You are to gather information whilst on the excursion at McClelland Gallery, as well as conducting your own
independent research, online, and at the library.

Create an annotated visual report OR essay, which clearly responds to the main inquiry question and
sub-questions.

Assessment Criteria

The extent to which the document demonstrates:



Very High 9-10 (A+)
A highly detailed, thoughtful and articulate analysis of ways in which artworks reflect artists interpretations of subject matter, influences, cultural and historical
contexts and the communication of ideas and meanings. Comprehensive description of the materials, techniques and processes. Detailed explanation of the
ways in which artists use art elements and art principles to demonstrate aesthetic qualities. Conducted extensive research and clearly discusses art practices
in relation to particular recognised historical and contemporary artworks.

Submission requirements:
Produce an annotated visual report OR a written essay.
Submit a written document in PDF format. (Including relevant images, if applicable)
Include your surname in the file title. For Example: wolfendenstudiopractices.pdf

Submit PDF electronically on or prior to the 3rd June 2017.
