L 2 Recent Solution Ground Improvement

Recent solutions involve using piles, columns or similar elements as vertical bearing elements to transfer embankment loads through soft soil layers down to firm substratum. Biaxial geosynthetic reinforcement is layered on top to reinforce the embankment slope. This foundation approach allows embankments to be practically settlement-free during construction without requiring a waiting period for soft soil settlement or installing vertical drains.

Recent solution with foundation on pile, columns or similar elements

Figure 1: General Scheme for pile, embankment with basal geosynthetic reinforcement (Mod,
from BS 8006)
The foundation consist of vertical bearing element such as pile or columns. Biaxial
geosynthetic reinforcement is one of two layer on top of them. The pile or columns transfer the
embankment load through the soft soil layer down into a firm substratum. The geosynthetic
reinforcement force below the slope across embankment. The advantages in this solution is

The embankment are practically settlement-free during construction

A waiting time for settlement is not required at all because the soft soil remains nearly

stress-free
No vertical drain installation is required.
