5 Mock Examination
English P.I Writing
Question 1
General Comments:
- Students did not read the questions carefully. You were requested to talk about
your plans and worries after your father had asked you to find a job. You should
not talk about your feelings and thoughts in general. You should try to talk about
what you have decided to do and your worries.
- Be specific. Do not talk too much about the fathers problems, your dream, your
ambition or your original plans. Do not talk too much about the economy or the
economic downturn which is only one of your worries.
- When you talk about some general points like unemployment rate, you have to
relate it to your own problems or worries.
- Your plans have to be logical and practical. Apply your general knowledge and
common sense in your writing.
Grammatical mistakes:
- Wrong use of part of speech
e.g. -F. 5 graduates (n.), I have just graduated from (v.), graduation (n)
graduating (present participle), graduated (past participle)
competitive (adj.), compete (v.)
I am worried about (adj.), Dont worry about me. (v.)
I am afraid (adj.), I afraid (wrong!)
I like studying. (gerund) further my studies (n.)
I lack experience. (v.) There is a lack of something (n.)
-

Wrong spelling of vocabulary

e.g. -experience (not experiment), economy (n.) (not economics), economic (adj.)
downturn (n.), clerk (not clark), secretary, grant (not grand) and loan,
subsidy, qualifications (different from qualities), requirement,
university

Preposition
e.g. -graduated from, apply for, worry about somebody, at university

Question 2
Very few students attempted this question, but this is not a difficult question. You
have learnt a lot about the qualities that a young leader should possess in some
listening practices that you have done. If you had paid attention in your work, you
should have got a lot of information about this.
Here are some suggested points:
- A good leader should have an analytical mind and good logical thinking which
can help him/her to make good judgement
- He/she should have courage and be decisive when facing problems; be able to stay
calm in case of emergency and should not panic
- Good communication skills and team spirit are important; willing to co-operate
with others
- Be considerate; willing to listen to different opinions and understand the need of
your team members
- Have good presentation skills and able to express oneself clearly so as to convince
your members to accept your ideas
- A good leader has to be a responsible person, with good qualities such as kindness
and honesty; he/she should be trustworthy
- He/she should have independent thinking, confidence in oneself and can work on
ones initiative
- Be willing to learn new things and meet challenges; have good general knowledge
and common sense
You can choose a few of the points mentioned above and elaborate on the ideas. You
have to explain why these points are important to a leader and give examples to
support your arguments.
You should also mention that the Outward Bound Youth Group have organized
different kinds of activities e.g. mountaineering, camping etc. to help them develop
their leadership and invite them to join your group.

Question 3
General comments:
- Some reasons given are not very convincing. Try to talk about the most
important or major ones instead of the minor ones.
e.g. One student said there would be an economic downturn after a war because a
lot of petroleum was used in the war and that would affect the price of oil. As a
result, other industries were affected. This explanation is too far-fetched. There
are other reasons more directly related to this consequence.
-

Some of the reasons are as follows:

Loss of human lives soldiers die in the battle fields; civilians/innocent people
being killed; result in broken families and orphans; loss of
manpower and labour
Economic activities these activities are disrupted during the war; factories and
fields are destroyed; tourism is discouraged; it takes a long
time and a huge amount of money to rebuild a city or a
country; great expenditure on military force
Natural environment landscapes are destroyed by heavy bombing or explosions
and fire caused by missiles etc.; there are land pollution, air
pollution or even water pollution; radiation can produce
great harmful effect on both human and animals

Grammatical mistakes:
- Vocabulary
e.g. nuclear war, atomic bombs, declare war, psychological problem, abandoned
children, starving, radiation, pregnant women, afford, separation
-

Part of speech
e.g. destruction (n.), destroy (v.), destructive (adj.)
unstable (adj.), destabilize (v) [please note the difference in spelling]
oppose the proposal (v.), I am opposed to (adj.)
affect (v.), effect (n.)
loss (n.), lose (v.), lost (past participle)

Use of passive voice

It is common to use passive voice in this kind of writing.
e.g. innocent people are killed; buildings/cities will be destroyed

Preposition
e.g. stop/prevent somebody from doing something
die of hunger; In my opinion; from my point of view; In my view

Other usages
e.g. avoid doing something (avoid + gerund)
to conclude, as a conclusion
Do not use also at the beginning or the end of a sentence

Overall comments for the students performance

- Do not put too much irrelevant information in your writing. Some students wrote a
long piece of writing with a lot of irrelevant points or repeating the same points.
That will only make the markers feel bored.
- You tend to make more mistakes when you are writing in a hurry. Remember to
leave some time for proofreading. You will be able to spot the careless mistakes if
you read your own writing carefully.
- Good organization is very important. The points should be concise and
well-presented. You should have elaboration on each point but make sure that the
explanation is relevant and to the point.
- Do revision before you go for the examination. Make sure you remember all the
important grammar rules such as tenses, agreement, voices, part of speech,
preposition, articles etc.
- Both the content and the language are important. Even if you have good ideas, you
cannot get high marks if you make too many grammatical mistakes.

-- The End --

Wishing you good luck!

(But hard work is more important!)
