CRC16

This document describes a prototype for a cyclic redundancy check using CRC-16. CRC is a method of detecting errors in data transmission by using a binary division algorithm to produce a remainder that is appended to the input bit. The design of the CRC polynomial depends on factors like the maximum block length and desired error protection. The circuit uses common integrated circuits like the NE555, 74LS194N, 74LS86N and resistors and capacitors to implement the CRC-16 check.

Cyclic Redundancy Check

Error detection is the process of monitoring data transmission and
determining when errors have occurred. A method of detecting error is the
cyclic redundancy check. A form of this is the CRC-16. Its main operation is
the binary division to produce the remainder that will be appended to the
input bit.
The design of the CRC polynomial depends on the maximum total
length of the block to be protected, the desired error protection features and
type of resources for implementing the CRC.

The number of bits to be added is equivalent to the highest exponent

of the dividing polynomial. Also the terms, present in the function will
indicate the number of XOR gates needed.
