Nine African American teenagers were riding a train through Alabama in 1931 when they got into a fight with white youths on board. Two white women then accused the black teens of raping them, which led to crowds forming outside the jail and an unfair trial where all the defendants were quickly sentenced to death despite clear evidence of their innocence. The cases went to the Supreme Court which intervened and ordered new trials due to rampant unfairness in the first trials.
