SUBJECT:
New Intermediate Transfer Belt (ITB) to Reduce Mottling on Certain 20 lb. Papers
Additional notes have been added to the Installation Procedure to prevent possible flipping of the ITB
Blade, a note when executing the auto gradation adjustment and how to determine the ITB spring type
installed.
GENERAL:
This Technical Publication describes a change made to the Intermediate Transfer Belt (ITB) to reduce
mottling that may occur when printing on certain 20 lb. papers.
DETAILS:
When printing on certain 20 lb. papers with a rough surface texture, mottling may occur in high-density
areas. Mottling specifically refers to a phenomenon where there is uneven fill in areas of high-density
images. Media of a heavier weight (such as 24 lb. and 28 lb.) or of a smoother surface may not exhibit this
phenomenon.
The following image shows how mottling may be exhibited in a high-density image.
In order to reduce the occurrence of mottling on paper with a rough surface texture, a new Intermediate
Transfer Belt is being introduced. The new ITB is thinner allowing it to better conform to the uneven
surface of paper with a rough surface texture. Toner transfer is dramatically improved resulting in
improved image quality without compromising belt life.
To support the new ITB, the System Software has been upgraded to version 34.05 (DCON version 18.01).
It is very important to install the latest version of System Software in conjunction with the new ITB.

Beginning in February 2010, all imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5000 series models will be shipped with the
new ITB already installed at the factory. These machines can be identified by Item Code Suffix AC
printed on the label found on the box. All machines shipped prior to the implementation of the new ITB
will receive the new ITB countermeasure kit via a 100% Free of Charge distribution. The Free of Charge
distribution will begin in February 2010 with an early limited quantity offering available in mid-January
2010.
SERVICING PROCEDURE:
Associated with this Technical Publication, please find the imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5000 Series New
ITB Installation Procedure. Please follow these instructions closely and be very careful to avoid damaging
the new ITB during the installation process.
It is imperative that sample prints be generated both BEFORE and AFTER the new ITB installation. A
comparison of the before and after sample prints should clearly demonstrate the improvement in output
quality. Ideally, a CA-7 or CA-8 Test Chart should be used generate the sample prints.
3. Upgrade the System Software on the device to version 34.05 or later (DCON version 18.01 or later).
