Activity

Activity #1: Freddy the Fish

Students will be given a bowl of water with a spongy fish inside. The students will be allowed to name their fish. The
teachers (Griselda, Morgan, Anna, Eric, Will) will go around and put food dye in their water bowl to pollute their
water. The fish should turn brown and will become sick because of the pollutants. Students will hopefully realize
that when you pollute waterways, the organisms in the water are harmed.

Activity #2: Harmful or Helpful (20 minutes)

Students will be in groups of about 5 (some groups may have only 4). There will be chart paper on the walls that have
a harmful and a helpful section. There will be sticky notes that have statements that have something that is either
harmful or helpful to the environment.
Example: Carpooling
Example2: Littering
The students will have to take each sticky note and place it in either of the two sections. They will be allowed to talk
amongst themselves to place the sticky notes in the correct section. Teachers will be walking around to make sure
students understand words such as littering and carpooling.
Teachers will go over what the answers should be and make sure students understand the explanation
behind each.
